2023 Xin Jiang Ta Cheng Accordion Art Festival - Chinaby Harley Jones |
Guinness World Record Achieved at the 2023 Xin Jiang Ta Cheng Accordion Art Festival. Video above of the 2525 live accordionists, plus 2003 verified online to total 4528 accordion players. Full report of this amazing huge event in Ta Cheng, China is online at: 2023Tacheng There are probably more accordionists per head of population in Tacheng than any other city in the world. Tacheng is in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region of China, and to reach Tacheng, takes over 5 hours flying time from Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing and is close to the border of Kazakhstan. To put this in perspective, London to Moscow is 3 hours 40 minutes. The China Daily Times (English edition) wrote: "Dubbed as the "city of accordion", Tacheng has a rich history and legacy of accordion. The accordion is akin to a symbol of the city, and out of every 10 people there will be two or three who can play the accordion. |
Premio Bari Accordion Festival 2023 – Italyby Christine Johnstone |
The Premio Bari Accordion Festival 2023 will be held at the Church of San Gaetano in Bari Vecchia, Italy on September 9th and 10th, 2023, organised by the AFI Italian Accordion Association, with the patronage and contribution of the Municipality of Bari - Department of Culture. The Competition aims to encourage competition between young talents, to contribute to the growth of the culture of the classical concert accordion and to promote the desire for dialogue, creativity and affirmation in the fascinating world of music. The competition is divided into two sections: - classical accordion soloists section - chamber music section with accordion The international jury includes: Stefan Hussong (President), Basha Savinska, Massimo Signorini, Marco Vanni and Tiziana Portoghese. Radu Ratoi 2023 Concert Tour – Chinaby Christine Johnstone |
Radu Ratoi (Moldova), winner of many of the highest level international competitions including the Coupe Mondiale, began his concert tour of China with performances in Qinhuangdao on August 16th and in Xi’an on August 17th. During his extensive tour, Radu will play 21 concerts in 22 days as well as giving masterclasses. Accordionists Perform at Tribute Concert for Asmund Bjørken - Norwayby Christine Johnstone |
Accordionists will perform at a Tribute Concert for Norwegian accordionist & saxophonist, Asmund Bjørken (19 August 1933 – 29 January 2018) at the Norwegian Radio and Television Museum (Norsk Radio-og Fjernsynsmuseum) in Selbu, Norway, on August 20th, 2023 from 4pm. Asmund (picture right) specialised in jazz and folk music. The event will mark his 90th birthday and feature 34 musicians on stage. Performers include P.A. Røstad Orchestra (picture below), Sigmund Sæther, Stian Carstensen and Tore Johansen. Viggo Valle is the presenter. |
Accordion Orchestras Perform at BeethovenFest Bonn - Germanyby Christine Johnstone |
The BeethovenFest Bonn will be held in Bonn, Germany on September 2nd, 2023. The event will include students from a wide variety of music schools in Bonn (and surrounding areas) plying music on several stages. "Set the stage for Beethoven" will take place from 12 pm on various stages in Marktplatz. Friedensplatz, Bonngasse, Opernfoyer and Remigiusplatz. The Akkordeon-Orchester Wesseling (conducted by Anita Brandtstäter) will perform their "Gemeinsam musizieren mit Quetsch" (Making squeeze music together) concert in the foyer of the Bonn Opera at 12 midday. They will present mainly modern original music for accordion orchestras such as: You Could Be the Best (Pop-Song), Dance With Me the Blues (Blues), Happy Waltz in Spring and many more. |
1st Valcamonica International Accordion Competition – Italyby Christine Johnstone |
The 1st Valcamonica International Accordion Competition will be held in Valcamonica, Brescia, Italy on September 23rd and 24th, 2023, organised by the Mountain Community of Valle Camonica, the Union of Municipalities of Val Saviore, the Municipality of Cevo, the Pro Loco Valsaviore, the Promo Cevo and the Association "El Teler" of Berzo Demo. The competition aims to promote musical culture and enhance young musicians. The Artistic Director is Eugenia Marini. The event is open to accordionists of all nationalities. The jury will be made up of Vincenzo Abbracciante, Saria Convertino, Michele Fedrigotti, Marie-Andrée Jeorger and Eugenia Marini (Secretary of the Commission Francesco Zaccaria). Accordionists Perform at Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival - Finlandby Christine Johnstone |
Accordionists Sonja Vertainen and Sini Ström (picture left wearing performance masks) will perform at the Helsinki Contemporary Opera Festival, held at the Alexander Theatre in Helsinki, Finland on August 18th and 19th, 2023. Together with Finnish-Swedish writer Heidi von Wright, Norwegian composer Tze Yeung Ho created the new chamber opera “Det här är ögönblicket” (This is the Moment) for two voices and two accordions in three short acts, reflecting on the concept of death on the opera stage. The event also includes a short intermezzo for an accordion duo written by the Finnish composer Dante Thelestami. |

Duo Artina, which features Martina Jembrišak (accordion) and Andrea Jelavic (flute) will perform in concert at the Centar Za Kulturu Korcula (Korcula Culture Center), Atrium of Korcula Town Hall in Korcula, Croatia on August 25th, 2023. The duo is a chamber ensemble that got its name from the uninhabited island of Artina, located in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. The musicians promote contemporary classical music with their work and began their collaboration a few years ago with their first concert at the Summer Charms of Classical Music in Split, Croatia. “Saso Avsenik & his Oberkrainer” will perform at the Radgonska Noc 2023 festival at Trg svobode in Gornja Radgona, Slovenia on August 26th, 2023. Sašo's grandfather and uncle, brothers Slavko and Vilko Avsenik invented the legendary style of Oberkrainer music in 1953. The ensemble, which features Sašo Avsenik (accordion), Aleš Jurman (bass), Matic Plevel (guitar), Denis Daneu (trumpet), Tommy Budin (clarinet), and singers Luka Sešek and Lucija Selak, perform a variety of Slovenian folk music. 2023 CIA Video Archive and Education Project, Bijeljina - Bosnia and Herzegovinaby Harley Jones |
The Scandalli Accordion Factory is the sponsor of the 2023 Video Archive and Education Project, 2023 Coupe Mondiale, 5-9 September, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The "Video Archive Education Project" is a project initiated in 2010 by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) with assistance from sponsors and Accordions Worldwide. Videos should be online approximately 90 minutes after the live performance or live competition and viewers will have free downloads of Coupe Mondiale competitions playing a vast range of different types and styles of music. The project includes a video of all the Coupe Mondiale categories and their contestants to be kept in the CIA archives in Finland, which over the coming years will become a wealth of historical recordings, including the premiere of many original accordion works and the emergence of upcoming artists at the Coupe Mondiale. We thank the Scandalli Accordion Factory for their sponsorship enabling this ambitious free project to assist accordion students and tutors throughout the world. |
