7th Hallein Accordion Festival Celebrates 50th Anniversary – Austriaby Christine Johnstone |
The 7th Hallein Accordion Festival, which will also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Hallein Accordion Orchestra (Akkordeon-Orchester Hallein) will take place at the Stadttheater Hallein in Austria from March 16th to 19th, 2022. Performers include: March 16th: “Next Generation” from the Musikum Music School in Salzburg will kick-off the festival with a concert at the Musikum Hallein at 6pm.Admission is free. March 17th: Duo Klak (picture left) which includes Stefan Kollmann (accordion) and Markus Fellner (clarinet, percussion, & vocals will perform World music at the Celtic Museum Hallein at 7.30pm. March 18th: Paier-Valcic-Preinfalk (picure below) - Klaus Paier (accordion, bandoneon), Asja Valcic (cello) and Gerald Preinfalk (soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet) will performs pieces from their album “Fractal Beauty” at the Stadttheater Hallein at 7.30pm March 19th: Festive concert by the Accordion Orchestra Hallein (picture top) directed by Prof. Alois Breitfuss at the Stadttheater Hallein, 6pm. The German Harmonica Association (DHV Landesverband Baden-Württemberg e. V.) will hold an “Easter Working Week 2022” event at the Federal Academy for Musical Youth Education Trossingen in Germany from April 10th to 14th, 2022. The event will focus on making music, being creative, continuing education and exchanging ideas with workshops, evening events and lessons by qualified lecturers complemented by an attractive and informative supporting programme in the music city of Trossingen. International Festival of Accordion and Chamber Music “Eufoniјa” – Serbiaby Christine Johnstone |
Video: Hanzhi Wang performing "Hell und Dunkel" by Sofia Gubaidulina (Arr by Geir Draugsvoll). The “Eufonija” Festival of Accordion and Chamber Music will take place from May 16th to 22nd, 2022 at several locations in the city of Novi Sad, organised by the “Eufonija” Association as part of the Matica cluster within the Heroines programme. The Festival of Accordion and Chamber Music was established in Novi Sad seven years ago to promote and develop art music for the accordion. This year’s event is dedicated to the promotion of women in art who, with their energy and commitment, have created the history of the accordion of 20th and 21st century art music. The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for May 18th, at the Serbian National Theater in Theater Square, Novi Sad, Serbia, featuring a performance by Hanzhi Wang, a Danish-Chinese accordionist, who will be accompanied by the Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra. Hanzhi will perform the world premiere of “Matica”, written for the accordion and orchestra by the prominent Iranian composer Arshia Samsaminia, commissioned by the “Eufonija” Festival exclusively for this event. Ladislav Horák Performs with Prague Conservatory Chamber Orchestra – Czech Republicby Christine Johnstone |
Ladislav Horák performed in concert with the Prague Conservatory Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Chuhei Iwasaki – Japan) at the Conservatory Concert Hall on February 15th, 2022. The performance opened the Eternal Hope 2022 Festival in Prague. Their program featured works by Pavel Haas - “Studies for Strings” and Ástor Piazzolla - Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (Four Seasons in Buenos Aires) which included Verano Porteño (Summer - Allegro moderato), Otoño Porteño (Autumn - Allegro moderato), Winter Door (Winter - Slow) and Primavera Porteña (Spring - Allegro). The festival program will continue until April 3rd and will include a variety of concerts, lectures, discussions and literary readings. |

Accordionist Javier López Jaso will give an Improvisation Course at the Theater l'Escorxador in Lleida, Spain on March 12th, 2022 organised by the ACDA (Associació Catalana d'Acordionistes). ACDA students will learn and develop different methods of improvisation. The course will finish with a concert by Javier López Jaso together with the students registered for the course. Video: Kaiser/Butt New World Jazz Quartet live in Halle, Germany at the 2021 Global Accordion Music Festival Akkordeon Akut. The "Kaiser/Butt New World Jazz Quartet" includes accordionist Valentin Butt, who was also a member of the Landes Accordion Ensemble. After a two-year break, the Global Accordion Music Festival Akkordeon Akut returned to Halle's stages from October 10 to 21, 2021. We would like to thank all partners who made this small but sustainable festival edition possible. The next festival awaits you in the fall of 2023. |

The 2022 Accordion Star International Competition & Festival will be held online this year from April 15th to 24th, 2022. The competition is organised by founder and director, Sergei Teleshev and is supported by Northwest Accordion Society, Cotati Accordion Festival, Tempo Trend Music, Petosa Accordions, Pigini Accordions and other festivals and organizations in North America, Europe, and Asia. The event will include concerts, master classes, interviews and presentations by competition jurors and festival guests. Accordion students, amateurs and professional accordionists of all ages are welcome to participate. The international jury features leading performers, teachers, composers, conductors, and producers from USA, Canada, Russia, China, Italy, France, Germany, Ukraine, Albania, Sweden, Austria, Belarus, Cyprus, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Scotland, Serbia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, South Africa, and other countries. Viacheslav Semionov (Russia) is presiding as Jury President. Winners will be announced in 14 categories of varying genres, combos, age groups and instruments (piano, bayan, button, digital and accordion related e.g. bandoneon, concertina, melodica, Russian garmon etc). New competition categories include the “Astor Piazzolla Music Award,” and two categories “Accordion Star 37+” which have no age restrictions and are divided into amateurs and professionals. Trio Hiltula will entertain at a lunch time “Tango Live” concert at the Classic Salon Amadeus in Motomachi, Kobe, Japan on March 6th, 2022 at 2pm. The trio includes Ville Hiltula (bandoneon), Hanako Tanimoto (violin) and Satoko Tsutsumi (piano). The Accordion Association Musicorda will celebrate their 66th anniversary with their first concert since 2019, held at the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep, MCO, Studio1 in Hilversum, Netherlands on March 6th, 2022 at 1.30pm. The concert will include performances by the A-orchestra conducted by Tim Fletcher and the B-orchestra conducted by Roelof van Kooi. Both men “conduct with passion and enthusiasm, and always take the orchestras a step further.” The two orchestras (pictured below) will present a varied program with guest players Fata Morgana (harmonica), Ingrid Lubbers (violin) and Marjolein Ridder (bagpipes). Sofia Ros will perform the Aconcagua Concerto with the Friends of the Festival orchestra, in the finals of the Edinburgh Music Competition Festival on March 13th, 2022. She will compete with three other finalists playing piano, cello and violin. The event will be held at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland. Five days later, on March 18th, Sofia will give a solo recital at the Purcell Room in London, England. |

Seven piece Celtic punk band “Flogging Molly” will perform a live (and online) concert to celebrate St Patrick’s Day at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, USA on March 17th, 2022, presented by Bushmills. The event also celebrates the grand re-opening of the group’s free annual outdoor festival, which includes “a day stacked with live performances, beer, food, games and more!” In addition, their performance will celebrate the release of their brand new single “These Times Have Got Me Drinking”, arriving worldwide on March 10th through Rise Records. “Flogging Molly” includes Matt Hensley (accordion, concertina, vocals) along with players of a variety of instruments such as guitar, bodhran, violin, tin whistle, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, drums, percussion and vocalists. Video: "Firedance" by Duo Two Accordions Duo Two Accordions (Sergei Teleshev and Maria Telesheva) will give an online concert for the San Francisco Accordion Club on March 20th, 2022. Maria Telesheva was six years old when she started to play the accordion (taught by her father, Sergei Teleshev) and two months after Maria started playing, she won her first International Competition. Since then, she has won several International Competitions in the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, and Belarus. Classically trained at the Academy of Music in Voronezh, Russia, Sergei Teleshev is a winner of many international accordion competitions. Being the founding member and accordion player of Trio Voronezh (Russia/USA), Classic Klezmer Trio (Sweden), Valinor Quartet (USA/UK), East-West International Project (USA/Japan), Sergei & Nati (USA/Russia) and Duo Two Accordions (USA), he collaborates with many internationally recognized artists, ensembles, and orchestras, composing and arranging music. It is a special treat to listen to the duo of Sergei Teleshev and Maria Telesheva. Their performances are entertaining, virtuosic, and delightful to watch. Naiko and I.A. Gerber will perform along with laureates of interregional, all-Russian and international competitions and festivals. Video: Promotional video of the CNIMA Accordion School The CNIMA (Centre National et International de Musique et d'Accordéon) is a French based accordion school founded by famous accordion tutor Jacques Mornet and award-winning accordionist, Nathalie Boucheix (pictured left), who will conduct a CNIMA Teaching Tour in the USA this coming Spring 2022. The tour will include masterclasses, workshops and demonstrations and is open to all ages, all levels, all styles and is suited for piano and button accordions. Tour dates as follows: • May 25th from 2pm to 5pm: Accordion Masterclass at South Oxford Place (BK) in New York City • May 30th at 2pm to June 3rd at 12.30pm: Four day Accordion Workshop at Alliance Française in New Orleans • June 5th from 2pm to 5pm: Accordion Masterclass at Petosa Accordion Shop in Seattle • June 9th at 7pm: Accordion demonstration at Alliance Française in Los Angeles Jacques Mornet has taught worldwide and is the recipient of the Gus Viseur Prize and the Russian Gnessin Academy Silver Disc and in 2003 was awarded the CIA Merit Award. Mornet's technique lies in approaching the accordion as a wind instrument rather than a keyboard instrument. The proper use of the bellows combined with the appropriate touch of the keys creates outstanding results that transforms one's playing and frees musicality. CNIMA students have enjoyed multiple successes, including having won a record 126 awards at international competitions. The school has trained several generations of finest French accordionists including Alain Musichini, Domi Emorine, Félicien Brut, Vincent LHermet and Christine Rossi to name a few.
