5th IMC World Music Forum in Brisbane, Australiaby Kevin Friedrich, CIA Ambassador |
Brisbane, Australia welcomes visitors from around the world as it hosts the World Music Forum in conjunction with the International Music Council (IMC, an NGO official partner of UNESCO) from November 21-24, 2013. Picture left - Kevin Friedrich, CIA Ambassador with composer Paul Hertel (Austria) who has recently had published "The 7 New Tangos" by Verlag Neue Musik, Berlin. These are 7 tangos composed by Paul Hertel, arranged for accordion by Manuela Kloibmüller in co-operation with the composer. Cover and sample page below. Over a thousand music professionals and other enthusiasts from all over the world have descended upon Brisbane, Australia, to discuss, plan, be part of, and experience the future of music on this planet. Attendees include musicians, producers, managers, organizations, administrators, festival directors, journalists, scholars, educators, facilitators, activists, policy makers and other lovers of the art in its myriad forms and contexts. The program and a select number of sessions will be available as live stream and or podcasts throughout the days of the Forum at: http://issuu.com/qcgu/docs/qcgu_wmf_program_digital A varied array of events will be held including: a session entitled ‘orchestral futures’ which features a symphonic performance rudely interrupted by an official who reads out a mock obituary of the western orchestra where planted members of the audience get up and voice rebuttals before the orchestra continues and ends quite differently from how it began. An interactive demonstration of how mobile phones are increasingly shaping people’s musical lives - from Ringtones to downloads to finding live music and learning to play an instrument then concludes with an improvised symphony for digital devices. Twelve promising young musicians from all over the world open proceedings by using the Queensland Conservatorium building and adjoining parklands as their ‘instrument’ to present a vision of musical future while a music technology team presents an underwater concert in the open-air public swimming pool, while those remaining on shore can plant, prune and harvest sounds in an electronic Sound Garden. The event concludes with the IMC 35th General Assembly of Delegates. The Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) has been a proud IMC member since 1975. In attendance for the CIA will be Harley Jones, Public Relations Manager and Kevin Friedrich, CIA Ambassador. |

Alessandro Gaudio Performs With Orchestra, Vallo della Lucania – Italyby Holda Paoletti-Kampl |
A packed audience applauded the opening concert of the chamber orchestra of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano, held in the cinema-theater ‘La Providence’ in Vallo della Lucania, on Thursday October 31st. The evening began with the overture ‘La Scala di Seta’, by Rossini, followed by the ‘Sinfonia Concertante KV 297’, by Mozart. The audience’s emotions were aroused when, in the second half, Alessandro Gaudio, recent winner of the CMA World Trophy Diatonic in Samara, Russia, joined the orchestra to perform Paganini's arrangement of the ‘Carnival of Venice’ for diatonic accordion and string orchestra, and then performing ‘La Cumparsita’ as a duo with Paolo Vertullo at the piano. The diatonic accordion was so expressive and touching, and seemed to give shape to the inner feelings of the musicians. The orchestra conductor, Massimiliano Carlini, emphasized the importance of the event and highlighted how the diatonic accordion can today, thanks to these high-caliber cultural events, acquire greater importance in diverse musical contexts. |
