 Janusz Zukowski, from Leeds, was the guest at Stockport Accordion Club, Cheshire, on March 11th, making a long awaited return visit. Jan’s brilliant playing brought the audience to its feet following an exciting and dynamic performance that included ‘Preludio’ (A. Volpi), Liszt’s ‘Hungarian Rhapsody No 2’, ‘Trieste Overture’ (P. Deiro), ‘Jolly Caballero’ (Frosini), ‘Poet and Peasant Overture’ (von Suppe), ‘Scherzo’ (J. Gart), ‘Czardas’ (Monti), ‘Czardas’ (Fugazza), and the ‘Sabre Dance’ – to name but a few! He also did some impromptu duets with concertina ace John Nixon, switching the style completely with ‘Besame Mucho, ‘The Shadow of Your Smile’, and ‘Jealousy’. Jan’s playing left the audience breathless, and wanting more. Others contributing to a memorable evening included Rob Howard and John Jones, Justin Ryan, Kesia Leatherbarrow, Ray Peacock, John Higham, and Ann Parker. Janusz Zukowski was NAO All Britain Virtuoso Champion in 1968 and 1969, and competed in the 1969 Coupe Mondiale in New York, placed 8th.
