Charles Magnante Quartet DVD, Pennsylvania - USA

Charles MagnanteAn historic DVD has been released featuring 5 numbers played by the legendary Charles Magnante Quartet. The pieces played are ‘Waltz a la Accordion’ (a swing arrangement by Magnante of Chopin’s ‘Op. 64, no. 1’ – the ‘Minute Waltz’); ‘Tantalizin’ (Magnante); ‘Andalucia’ (Ernesto Lecuona); ‘Sweet Sue’ (Harris/Young); ‘Dance of the Spanish Onion’ (David Rose).

These recordings were made in 1946, and have not been available for many years. These priceless ‘soundies’ (an early version of the music video) were thought to be lost, but were recently rediscovered by some accordion aficionados, released by the Italian company Bella Music Roma, and are available from Henry Doktorski in the USA.

Doktorski commented: “I put this on my DVD player and pressed ‘repeat’ and listened to it all day long without getting tired”.

The line up is Charles Magnante – accordion, George Wright on organ and piano, Jack Smith on electric guitar, and Eugene Ettore on double bass. Charles Magnante (1905-1986) was one of the world’s most revered accordionists, and his artistry did much to raise the image of the accordion in the USA and overseas. George Wright went on to become America’s foremost theatre organist, Jack Smith was a leading jazz guitarist and vocalist, and Eugene Ettore found fame as an accordionist, composer and arranger.
