Translation from the Deutsche Harmonikaverband e.V. (DHV) Germany website:

A festival as a declaration of love to the accordion

On May 26, 2018, at 6 pm, this year's Philharmonika Concert will take place in the chamber music hall of the Philharmonie Berlin. But this year's concert will not stop there, a masterclass with accordion star Grayson Masefield, and a variety of smaller concerts in varying instrumentation will be combined to form a full accordion music festival.

Sometimes delicate and tender, sometimes powerful, sometimes lively, sometimes almost overconfident, always passionate, from the classical to the avant-garde - the Philharmonika Festival presents the accordion in all its tonal and stylistic range. In interaction with the string orchestra, the young instrument establishes itself in the philharmonic context. The highlight of the festival will be the Philharmonika Concert in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic on May 26, 2018.

It is the fifth major accordion event of the Pantonale e.V. - and a declaration of love for the instrument. Virtuoso's from New Zealand, Russia, Germany, Slovakia and Poland interpret in their very own way, works from three centuries and contemporary original compositions for accordion and string orchestra.

The five-time accordion world champion Grayson Masefield from New Zealand, the German forerunner of the digital accordion and multiple award winner Matthias Matzke (who however chose the classical instrument for the concert), the brilliant, young Russian virtuoso Anna Kryshtaleva and her teacher Yuri Shishkin, who inspires an international audience with his musical-pictorial interpretations. With the duo 'Accosphere', Alena Budzinakova and Grzegorz Palus and the duo 'con: trust', Daniel Roth and Marius Staible, two young, internationally successful accordion duos will present their skills to the audience on the chamber music hall stage.

The string orchestra will be conducted by the Ukrainian conductor, composer and accordion virtuoso Vladimir Zubitsky.

Before and after the Philharmonika concert in the chamber music hall, there will be other concerts at Berlin venues being: May 24, 2018 at the Joseph Schmidt Music School Treptow-Köpenick, and on May 27 at the Pyramid Exhibition Center in Berlin Hellersdorf. Also in other music schools of the Berlin districts as well as at international schools of the city smaller concerts are given as part of the festival.

As a special highlight for accordionists and students, the Pantonale e.V. offers a masterclass with Grayson Masefield on May 27th. Five to seven active participants can experience the star virtuosos up close, work with and be inspired. The interested public can participate as passive viewers of the master class and learn more about the instrument accordion and Grayson Masefield's experiences in making music, learning and teaching. The master class alone is certainly worth a trip to Berlin.
