Students and teachers of the Sibelius Academy will join forces this month to educate audiences on the 200-year history of the accordion and the wide range of accordion music, including everything from folk music to the latest chamber music.

The four-day festival, held from March 23rd to 26th, 2022, showcases the endless possibilities the accordion presents in all genres of music.

The opening concert on March 23rd features a premiere of a new work by Jin Oh (picture left) for accordion, guitar, kantele and piano and performances by Maria Kalaniemi-Eero Grundström Duo, Veli Kujala and duo Tommie Black-Roff-Erika Hammarberg.

Thursday and Friday are a triumph of young artists with a student concert and two Master's concerts. On March 24th Minna Ristamäki performs her Master's concert featuring works by Rofelt, Lohse, Gubaidulina, Vuori, J.S. Bach and Korpijaakko.

On Friday morning a student concert will take place and in the evening Sonja Vertainen performs her Master's concert including a premiere of a new work for guitar and accordion by the famous Finnish composer Kimmo Hakola (picture above right) and also works by J.S. Bach, Liszt, Kaipainen and Corrette.

The festival culminates on its final day, Saturday, March 26th, in two concerts. The first concert celebrates Professor Matti Rantanen's 70th birthday with works premiered by him, now performed by the current students of the Sibelius Academy and Rantanen's former students. The second concert of the day, which concludes the festival, is performed by the guest artist and masterclass teacher Maciej Frackiewicz. The concert entitled "to be expanded..." includes Polish compositions by Penderecki, Wielecki, Krzanowski and more.

Almost all of the concerts except the closing concert will be streamed live. You can find more information about the concerts and the streaming links on https://www.uniarts.fi/en/event-calendar/?start=23.3.2022&end=27.3.2022&search_term=accordion%20festival
