12th International Competition for Diatonic Accordion – Sloveniaby Werner Weibert |
The 12th International Competition for Diatonic Accordion (Styrian type) for soloists will be held at the "Terme Olimia" in Podcetrtek, Slovenia from May 26th to 29th, 2022. The event is organised by the Harmonikaverband Osterreichs (HVO Austrian Accordion & Harmonica Association), in conjunction with the Slovenian Association ZDHS, Terme Olimia and Sudklang Harmonicas. The Jazz Accordion Festival (JAF) is back, organised by the City of Castelfidardo Assessorato alla Cultura is being held on 8-10 April 2022. After the postponement of 2021 imposed by covid restrictions, the JAF is back. "We want to restart the 2022 musical season dedicated to bellows instruments”, says the Castlelfidardo councilor for culture Ruben Cittadini. Artistic Director is renowned Jazz accordionist Simone Zanchini. A feature on the evenings of Friday 8 and Saturday 9 April, is when all the musicians are asked to participate in the "JAF - session" a jam session in free jazz style with bellows and standard jazz instruments. Beltango Spring Tour 2022 – Portugal, France, Germany, Austriaby Christine Johnstone |

Beltango began their Spring concert tour on March 24th and will perform concerts in Portugal, France, Germany and Austria. Band members are Aleksandar Nikolic (bandoneon), Ivana Nikolic (piano & vocals), Antonija Barna (violin), Bogdan Pejic (guitar) and Petar Holik (double bass), who enjoy performing a variety of traditional tango pieces, Tango-Nuevo, contemporary tango and Balkango. The British College of Accordionists (BCA), Principal Raymond Bodell, will host their 2022 Anniversary Festival online this year in May. The event will include a National Graded solo competition for each of the 12 examination grades, and an International Competition for soloists of all ages as well as junior and senior ensembles. The closing date for video entries is April 15th, 2022. Competition videos will then be forwarded to the jury members. The videos will be judged by National and International jury using the BCA’s marking criteria giving each performance a mark out of 100. Each jury member will submit their marks to the BCA and the result calculated & published for all categories on Sunday 15th May 2022. Video 1: “Snow Train Shuffle” This is a fun, fast, showy number by John Gart. Duet arrangement by Dan Christian. Video 2: “Superman” This is an epic accordion arrangement of the "Superman: March." Dan Christian has taken the entire John Williams symphonic score and arranged it for just 2 accordions!! Kim and Dan Christian invite all to their Albuquerque Accordion Extravaganza and Band Camp which will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico from May 12th to 14th, 2022. The fun, interactive 3 day event will include attendees working together with people from all over the USA to perform an awesome and entertaining set of music in front of an appreciative and energetic audience. The band will be accompanied by the famous Las Vegas drummer, Rich Delabio. The orchestra program will include "Gimme Some Lovin’" (Blues Brothers), "Peter Gunn" (Groovin' Detective Series Tune), "Cotton Candy Twist" (An original accordion chart - Swing), "Somewhere Out There" (James Horner), "Pilgrim's Chorus" (Wagner), "Danse Macabre" (St. Saens), and "Ombo" (Palmer-Hughes). Daily rehearsals, workshops and a dress rehearsal will culminate in a final concert at the First Unitarian Church on May 1th from 7pm to 9pm. Registrations close on April 1st, 2022. Registrations are now open for the online 15th Premio Andrea Parodi World Music Competition, which was created in honour of the distinguished Sardinian artist Andrea Parodi, who passed away 16 years ago. Contestant videos must be sent to the Artistic Commission established by the Foundation, who will select ten finalists to perform in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy at the "Premio Andrea Parodi" Festival 2022. The prize for the winner includes concerts and performances in some of the partner music festivals in their 2023 editions, such as European Jazz Expo (Sardinia), Folkest (Friuli), not forgetting the very same Premio Andrea Parodi 2023. NJAO Play-In Orchestra Concert – Netherlandsby Christine Johnstone |
The Netherlands Youth Accordion Orchestra (NJAO - Nederlands Jeugd Accordeon Orkest) will run a Play-In Concert in Fonteinkerk Amersfoort (Church in Amersfoort), Netherlands on June 11th, 2022 at 7.30pm. A variety of music will be played by an orchestra (conducted by Jorind Josemans), from Piazzolla to Queen and from Adele to Piaf. Rehearsals will be held on April 2nd, 3rd, 23rd, May 14th and June 11th from 10am to 4pm in Amersfoort or Apeldoorn. The orchestra (pictured below) consists of young accordionists, aged between 12 and 26, from various regions of the country. The Black Pencil Ensemble (which includes accordionist Marko Kassl – pictured below) will perform at the opening show of the Floriade Expo 2022 in the Esplanade in Almere Centrum, Netherlands on April 13th, 2022 at 9pm. This sold-out show, entitled “Schoonschip” with the Theatre Company Vis a Vis, will include the ensemble playing with 200 children from theatre and dance schools in Flevoland. The theme of the expo is “Growing Green Cities” and the children “are in control and lead us to a new green world.” Two further shows will be held on April 15th and 16th, 2022. The Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) led by President Mary Ann Covone invites everyone to join in its 2022 Festival. Come and celebrate the accordion and ATG’s 80+ years as an important organization for accordion teachers, professional accordionists, and other accordionists and students. The Festival includes four separate concerts; a unique “Petting Zoo” open without charge to the general public, giving the curious and youngsters a hands on experience with an accordion; the opportunity to play in an 80 musician orchestra on a magnificent concert stage; Exhibitors; Competitions with prize money and trophies; proficiency examinations; Workshops; a Gala Banquet, and, most importantly, the renewed opportunity to meet with and enjoy the company of fellow accordionists from across the county. The Festival takes place from July 20th to 24th, 2022, in Lisle, Illinois at two locations: The Lisle Hyatt Regency and the Wheaton College campus’ Armerding Center for Music and Arts and Barrows Auditorium. Three evening concerts will be at the college campus. The evening concert at Barrows Auditorium features the UMKC Accordion Ensemble directed by Joan Cochran Sommers. The event competition will include a variety of age group categories for soloists, duos, ensembles, groups and orchestras. Closing date for entries is June 15th, 2022.
