Austria 2014 Coupe Mondiale Selection at ‘Tag der Harmonika’ - Austria

This year’s ‘Tag der Harmonika’ was held from May 1st to 4th in St. Peter-Freienstein, which is located in the lovely region of Styria. The competition attracted more than 350 participants and included categories for accordion soloists, duos, ensembles and orchestras, for harmonica and the ‘Steirische Harmonika’ (Styrian Harmonica, a type of diatonic accordion), which has become very popular recently.

2014 is a very special year for Austria’s Accordion Confederation HVÖ as it is celebrating its 60th anniversary by organizing the most prestigious international accordion competition, the ‘Coupe Modiale’, in Salzburg from October 27th to November 2nd.

Danijel Piller, Nikolas Lazic and Johannes Münzner were selected to represent Austria at the 2014 Coupe Mondiale. Polish students Marcin Jablonski and Kacpar Stalewski, from Katowice, also contributed to the very high level of this category.

Michael Frankenberger was very convincing in the junior classic, whereas Nina and Stefan Djordjevic took their first prizes in the beginner’s categories by showing their great potential for the future.

Andreas Schmiedhofer, from South-Tyrol, not only took first prize in the highest category of the diatonic competition, but also in the competition to remember Erich Moser (former diatonic world champion), a category organized for the very first time. As usual, there were many excellent performances of diatonic duets and folk music ensembles.

Gottfried Hubmann was the perfect organizer of this event, and was rewarded ‘Merited Friend of the Styrian Harmonica’ by HVÖ-president Werner Weibert. More pictures can be found at www.harmonikaverband.at
