SCIENCE AND CONCERTINAS - UK Contributed by Chris Timson A new series of the popular science program ‘Local Heroes’ has just started on BBC 2 (UK). The October 5th edition has a segment devoted to Charles Wheatstone, inventor of the concertina and is mostly set in the computer games shop in Gloucester where he was born. Chris Timson was asked to provide consultancy for the show and he also provided the concertinas shown in the broadcast. Of particular interest is the symphonium, loaned by Colin Dipper. The symphonium is the direct predecessor of the concertina, and Chris believes there are no more than 20 left in the world. |
