2011 Coupe Mondiale Concludes in Shanghai - Chinaby Harley Jones |

Two days after the Final Coupe Mondiale Concert and Prizegiving, some of the CIA Executive still remained in Shanghai completing their tasks. CIA President Raymond Bodell was invited to meet with the Vice-President of the Shanghai Normal University Cong Yuhao and Lu Jianfei, Secretary of the Party Committee of SHNU, to offer his sincerest thanks for the wonderful support the University gave in hosting the Coupe Mondiale. The University provided three concert hall competition venues, CIA Office facilities and a large number of staff and assistants. Part of the thank you letter read: "Under the leadership of Prof. Li Cong, your Dean of the Music College and also President of the China Accordion Association and Zhao Jiping, President of the Chinese Musicians Association, the Chinese competitors made the quite remarkable achievement of winning one category plus achieving a 1st, 2nd or 3rd placing in 6 out of 7 categories of the Coupe Mondiale world international competitions. The Mayor of Shanghai Han Zheng attended the Opening Ceremony and the festival of more than 1,300 performers from the 29 accordion teams, appearing in squares, parks and business centers in Shanghai received lots of positive media coverage in newspapers, radio and TV. The Shanghai Normal University has every reason to very proud of how they have represented China to the highest of standards and promoted China around the world to all accordionists and musicians." Maestro Peter Piccini (1936 – 2011), Perth – Australiaby Rob Howard |
Peter Piccini (Junior), accordionist, pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, passed away on October 11th 2011 at Murdoch Hospice, Perth, Western Australia. Peter Piccini was born in Sydney, Australia, on June 4th 1936. From an early age music was a large part of his life. He made his debut as an accordionist at a school concert when he was only seven years old, and began studying the accordion seriously from the age of 14. Peter began earnestly to learn the secrets of the accordion from his father Peter Piccini Senior, known as the ‘Daddy of the Accordion’ in Australia, who was the first to introduce the piano accordion in Australia. From he age of 15 Peter Jr. started broadcasting for the national and commercial radio stations and appeared in many stage performances, and recording sessions on accordion and the piano. In 1955 he went to Europe and England, broadcasting for the BBC, appeared in television shows and performed at the famous Club Pigalle, London, as accompanist for the French singer Line Renuld. While in Europe, Peter toured Italy with the famous Italian singer, Claudio Villa, with whom he appeared on radio, television, films, stage shows, and recordings. In 1963 Peter and his charming wife Serafina, launched on another tour overseas. During this tour, he began playing piano as well as the accordion. This led to engagements with leading orchestras and playing continuously throughout Europe, returning again to Australia in 1965. He then became Musical Director for Channel 9 Television Network and broadcasting for ABC in Australia. In 1968, he toured the Far East and Vietnam with all Australian concert party, entertaining the Australian and US forces. In 1972 he did another tour of Europe and the USA. He was then back in Australia in 1976, at which point Peter became very busy broadcasting and recording with his large orchestra. Peter Piccini continued recording and also composing until recent times, and his work has been much admired. Mirco Patarini and Antonio Spaccarotella Leave Shanghai, Concert in Seoul - Koreaby Mirco Patarini |
Mirco Patarini and Antonio Spaccarotella, were CIA delegates and Italian members of the Coupe Mondiale jury in Shanghai, China. They continued their journey in the East for a concert in Seoul, the capital of South Korea on October 9th, 2011. For the first time, an accordion concert was held at the new Open Stage Seoul Arts Center. In front of an audience of about 800 people, the two artists thrilled the audience with a repertoire of great variety, ranging from jazz to traditional Italian music, from Baroque transcriptions to original compositions and from the classical to the most important contemporary composers. Mirco Patarini had already given a concert in Seoul in October 2010, and since then the enthusiasm and interest of accordionists and accordion lovers has continued to grow, forcing the concert organizers to arrange a new concert for 2011. More are planned for the future. |
Julien Labro’s New CD ‘A Far Cry’, Michigan - USAby Rob Howard |
US-based French accordionist Julien Labro releases his new CD ‘A Far Cry’ on October 25th, on Azica Records. This is a collaboration with the world-renowned classical guitarist Jason Vieaux, and is an all-Piazzolla recording featuring some Julien Labro’s arrangements for guitar, bandoneón, with Boston’s exciting chamber orchestra. Included are Piazzolla's ‘Four Seasons in Buenos Aires’, as well as the ‘Double Concerto for Bandoneón, Guitar, & String Orchestra’, and the multi-movement duet ‘Histoire du Tango’. From Gail Wein's liner notes: "It is possible that the classical world wouldn't have tango music on its radar, had it not been for composer and bandoneón player Astor Piazzolla. With his unique combination of backgrounds in western classical music, traditional Argentinean music and jazz, Piazzolla carried tango from dance halls and ballrooms to the concert stage". Cristiano Lui - accordion and bandoneon - and guitarist Stefano Ciotola – guitar, fresh from their recent great success in Castelfidardo, Italy, make their debut at this year’s ‘Accordions International 2011’, at Seacroft Holiday Village, Hemsby, Norfolk, from November 11th to 14th. Other guests at this festival include Pearl Fawcett-Adriano, Ksenija Sidorova (Latvia), Martynas Levickis (Lithuania), Jack Emblow & Tony Compton, Wayne Robertson, Harry Hussey, David Price, Rosemary Wright, Roy Hendrie, Bert Santilly, and the accordion quintet Norvic Concordia (MD Peter Ayers). Professor Owen Murray, of the Royal Academy of Music, London, is a special guest at the festival. Workshops include Beginners, Elementary Orchestra, Intermediate Orchestra, Scottish Band, Jazz Group, Vintage Orchestra, Buskers Band, and Composers. The trade show includes The Accordion Shop, Birmingham Accordion Centre, Black Diamond Accordions, Limex, MAP Editions, Harry Kipling’s Musical Memorabilia Stall, and Robaccord Publications. ‘The Complete Guide To Mastering Left-Hand Bass/Chord Patterns’, North Carolina – USAby Rob Howard |
‘The Mighty Accordion’, by David DiGiuseppe, is a guide to playing the bass side of the accordion. The book includes a comprehensive collection of progressive exercises to guide the student in learning and mastering bass/chord patterns. For the beginner, the first few chapters assume little or no knowledge of the instrument and teach how to play simple accompaniment patterns. Uses of the major, minor and seventh chords are explained, with numerous exercises offered to develop skill in executing various bass/chord accompaniment patterns. For the advanced player, latter chapters present exercises on chord combinations needed to play sixth, minor seventh, major seventh and ninth chords, and other advanced techniques. Throughout the book, explanations are offered on the workings of the instrument and relevant music theory. The book includes 2 CDs, featuring many of the book's exercises played at both a slow and moderate tempo. David DiGiuseppe is an accomplished and versatile accordionist, mandolin and cittern player, singer, and storyteller. He is equally at home performing Irish tunes in a pub, French musettes in a cabaret, contra or Cajun music for a dance, or in the intimate setting of a concert hall. On Saturday October 8th, the Accordion Department at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama) held an Accordion Showcase concert in the Junior Conservatoire. Organised by Djordje Gajic(picture left), who established the Accordion Department in Glasgow, the concert attracted a near capacity audience in the Guinness Room. Performances were given by three of the current Junior Conservatoire students, Freddie Henderson, Zach Ronan and Valerie Barr, followed by postgraduate student Paul Chamberlain(picture right). Djordje Gajic gave a stunning solo performance before being joined by his wife Andrea Gajic to bring the concert to a rousing finish with Piazzolla’s ‘Grand Tango’. The Accordions Worldwide news for October 19th 1997 included an item about a forthcoming cruise, Norway to Denmark, featuring two accordionists. It is good to note that cruise ships with accordion entertainers happen quite often in various parts of the world, and this must be sheer bliss for enthusiasts on board! ACCORDION PERFORMS ON CRUISE SHIP - NORWAY by Per Bolstad From October 5th to 9th, Terje Dyrkolbotn and Per Bolstad (accordionist) will perform on the cruise ship M/S Bergen which sails from Norway to Denmark. This duo often perform on the ferries between Norway and Denmark and between Norway and England. They play various kinds of music including old Norwegian dance music that was mainly composed by Per Bolstad's great grandfather (1867-1975). He composed about 800 dances, waltzes, polkas, rheinlender, and mazurkas. Many of these have been recorded by various Norwegian and Swedish musicians. She played with Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Lena Horne, Dizzy Gillespie, Peggy Lee, and Victor Borge. In 1995 she was president of the FOTA (friend of the accordion) |
