Gervasio Marcosignori passed away at the age of 85 today 9th of March 2013. Gervasio Marcosignori, born in Castelfidardo December 3, 1927 was a master of the accordion and recognized throughout the world with a history full of performances in front of great personalities such as past Italian President Sandro Pertini, Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth and many more. Right after seeing him perform at the London Royal Festival Hall, playing Preludio by Volpi, the British press coined him with the appellation "poet of the accordion". His path to fame began at the age of seven, when he played for Benito Mussolini in 1934. Delighted with his performance, the Duce embraced the little Gervasio saying, "Keep it up, good Balilla." The first teacher was his father John Gervasio. At age 15, Gervasio won his first music competition. In 1959 he was awarded the Oscar for the world accordion. Of particular importance was its educational legacy: three volumes on "Technique of the Accordion". Marcosignori, in addition to all his technical performing skills, was appreciated for his unique interpretation of original music and transcriptions for accordion. Marcosignori has been in particularly great lover of classical music and this showed in his repertoire. The entire Accordion World is missing a great accordionist but most a great musician. |
