The French brought the accordion to the East African island of Madagascar in the 19th Century. Madagascar’s leading accordionist of recent times is Regis Gizavo. In 1998 he went on a tour of the USA, as reported in the Accordions Worldwide news for May 1st 1988. Gizavo became well known in France as a member of the Corsican group I Muvrini, and he has performed with musicians of different genres such as jazz, Arabic, African and pop. It would be good to know where he is playing nowadays. He will be performing in Texas, Iowa, New York, Illinois, Minneapolis, Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, including a performance at the Houston International Festival. Gizavo's music has been described as "exceptional, dynamic, fluid, complex and inventive". |
