‘14 Years Ago’ – AAA sponsored Master Class, then and nowby Rob Howard |
The Accordions Worldwide news for August 7th 1998 featured a report by Kevin Friedrich about a recently held AAA sponsored Master Class in New York, organized and led by the highly accomplished Dr William Schimmel. The event that year was circus themed. This year’s event has just been held, with the intriguing title, ‘Redemption: The Radar off the Radar’. Once again, Dr Schimmel, aided and abetted by his dance wife Micki Goodman, has unstintingly and imaginatively to produce an event that appears to be unlike any other in its scope and inventiveness. We hope this year’s event was as successful as it promised to be. ACCORDION CIRCUS IN THE BIG APPLE - USA Contributed by Kevin Friedrich Dr William Schimmel moderated a three-day series of workshops and concerts at what has become an annual affair, sponsored by the American Accordionists' Association. Discussions centered on the significance of competitions and contests in the accordion world, and the need for versatility of the accordionist in New York, which regularly ranges from Carnegie Hall, Broadway/Off Broadway to Frozen Yogurt commercials. A capacity audience was present at the Tenri Institute Theatre, in the Guggenheim Museum for a varied concert which included "The Lee & Bill Digital Circus" performing "The Vague Panther" (digital flute and accordion), Dr Schimmel giving a first accordion lesson to Ilona Vellios (who learnt popular Russian songs during the course of her 20 minute lesson) and "A Yiddish Festival of Song" performed by Schimmel and Paul Stein. The evening concluded with "The Rite of Fall" with Micki Goodman (dancer and choreographer) and Bill Schimmel. |
