'More Mantovani Magic' DVD, Dorset – UK

More Mantovani Magic DVD'More Mantovani Magic' is 2 disc DVD of a full two-hour concert filmed at The Lighthouse Arts Centre, Poole, in 2009 by the revived Mantovani Orchestra (MD Sam Newgarth), performing the original arrangements of some of the 1950s hits such as 'Charmaine, 'Diane', and 'Lonely Ballerina'. Other tracks include ‘Belle of the Ball’, ‘Eye Level’, ‘Siboney’, ‘Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps’, ‘Mexican Hat Dance’, ‘Babette’, ‘Theme for a Western’, ‘Bewitched’, ‘Merry Widow’, ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, ‘Summertime’, Dance of the Hours/Can Can’, ‘Carousel Waltz’, ‘Skyscraper Fantasy’, ‘Limelight’, ‘Gypsy Carnival’, ‘Cara Mia’, ‘Moonlight Serenade’, ‘Domino’, ‘Maigret’, ‘Percussion on Parade’, ‘Non Domenticar’, ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, ‘Blue Mantilla’, ‘As Time Goes By’, ‘España’, and ‘The Big Country’.

The famous cascading strings (as conceived by accordionist, composer and arranger Ronald Binge in the late 1940s) are heard - and seen - in all their trademark glory, to re-create the luscious trademark Mantovani sound and style. The 48-piece Mantovani Orchestra features some first rate soloists, including accordionist Eddie Hession, who perform many excellent instrumental solo passages. Those who enjoy 'light music' can now own and watch this elegant and inspirational music over and over again.

The DVD, available via Amazon, has two very interesting extras: 'Mantovani Memories' - several superb quality Pathe News films of performances by the 1930s Mantovani Tipica Orchestra - featuring Ronald Binge on accordion, and 'Mantovani - Behind the Scenes' - looking back at the man himself.

In the 1950s and 60s the original Mantovani Orchestra enjoyed phenomenal success around the world, especially in Britain and the USA, with over 50 best selling albums. It’s founder, Annunzio Paolo Mantovani (1905–1980), is probably more associated with the light orchestra genre than any other entertainer.
