Martynas Levickis: 2023 Opus Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year - Germanyby Christine Johnstone |
Video: Martynas Levickis (Lithuania) performing the J S Bach French Suite No. 5, BWV 816: Loure from the album “Autograph”. Martynas Levickis (Lithuania) has been awarded the 2023 Opus Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year award in Germany this week, for his new album “Autograph”. The Opus Klassik is the prize for classical music in Germany. The award ceremony will be held on October 7th, 2023, in the Elisabeth Church and on October 8th, 2023, in the Konzerthaus Berlin. Martynas’s next concert performance will be held on July 7th, 2023 at 7pm at the Hohen Luckow Castle in Mecklenburg, Germany as part of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Martynas will perform in an accordion sextet with Siniša Ljubojevic, Wieslaw Ochwat, Kamila Olas, Maris Rozenfelds and Ðorde Vasiljevic. Their program will include a variety of Tchaikovsky works for accordion sextet. |

Plans are well underway for the 2023 76th Coupe Mondiale being held in Bijeljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The event will be hosted by the CIA member, Association of Artists (Bijeljina), contact person Slaviša Peric, from 5-9 September 2023. Video: Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Grayson Masefield. A beautiful free-bass accordion jazz arrangement by Joseph Natoli, recorded Oct. 2018 at the Bartell Music Academy in Spokane, USA. The Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) 2023 festival will be held from July 19th to 23rd, 2023 in Lisle, Chicago, USA, Featured artists are coming from all over the world such as Grayson Masefield from New Zealand, who will premiere the latest composition by Gorka Hermosa (picture left) entitled “Meditatio”. Other performers include Duo Kollektiv (Austria), The Polyphonia Orchestra (Reunion Island), Nikolay Bine (Canada), Stas Venglevski (USA), and the (UMKC) Community Accordion Chamber Ensemble, directed by Joan Sommers (USA). A special treat this year will be Kevin Friedrich, joined by organist Tony Payne (Associate Professor of Music, Director of Special Programs and Artist Series at Wheaton College), Ron Dake (bass accordion) and Nathaniel Holman (percussion) in a performance of a work titled ‘Dargaville Impressions’ by well-known English accordionist and composer Ian Watson. The two movement work was commissioned by Kevin Friedrich in honor of the refurbishment of the historical organ at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church of his home town, Dargaville, New Zealand. The Agora Accordion Festival will be held in Adelboden, Switzerland from July 16th to 22nd, 2023. The 2023 Cotati Accordion Festival will be held at La Plaza Park, La Plaza, Cotati, California, USA on August 19th & 20th, 2023. Starting at noon on Saturday, August 19th, the Zydeco Dance Party opens up at Spanky’s, adjacent to the park, There is not only dancing inside the club, but there is a lot of dancing space outside on the wide sidewalk adjacent to the club which was full of dancers last year. Mark St. Mary, awarded the “Best Zydeco Band” by the Bay Area Blues Society, will be the opening act and the “Delta King” never fails to bring the best in traditional Louisiana zydeco music. Accordionists at Glastonbury Festival – UKby Rob Howard |
Accordionists entertained at the Glastonbury Festival which was held at Worthy Farm in Glastonbury, Somerset, England, UK from June 21st to 25th, 2023. London-based Russian accordionist Igor Outkine (picture above left) performed as well as the Good Habits duo, which features accordionist Pete Shaw and singer-cellist Bonnie Schwarz (picture above right). This year’s festival had over 210,000 attendees plus included over 40 hours of television coverage which aired on several BBC channels and over 85 hours of live radio coverage. |

Parno Drom will perform at the Seattle Polish Festival, held at the Seattle Centre Armory & Mural Amphitheatre in Seattle, Washington, USA on July 8th, 2023 from midday. The group, which features Bob Kozak (accordion & vocals), Katya Kiselyova (guitar & vocals), Lubov Plett (violin) and Elizabeth Lesztak (dancer), perform Eastern European Romani (Gypsy) style music from Russia, Poland, Hungary and beyond. They sing in the original language of each song including the Romany language of the Gypsies. The Polish Festival Seattle is a family-oriented event for the Greater Seattle multicultural community. The St Audries Bay Accordion Week will be held in St Audries Bay, West Quantoxhead, Nr Minehead, Somerset, England from July 14th to 21st, 2023. The event features a week of professional orchestra workshops, master classes, private lessons, concerts, ceilidh and general bellows related fun. Workshops include: • Musical Improv and Playing by Ear by Andrew Purkiss, which will focus on listening skills, improvisation and playing by ear. This will include playing without music using a simple tune to create and arrange together. • Technique and Bellows Work by Sammie Peckover-Mitchell, which will incorporate some simple exercises with bellows work to brush up your technique. • Ways to Approach Performance Anxiety by Caroline Hussey. If you’re an anxious player please come along and talk about what happens when we’re feeling anxious, and ways we can prepare for and cope with nerves when performing. • Introduction to the B-System Accordion by Lisa-Lee Leslie who will be offering the opportunity to come and learn all about the B-system accordion. Amélie Dénarié (picture above left) & François Heim (picture above right) will run a Diatonic Accordion Workshop in Hamlet of Chalap, Senechas, France from July 16th to 22nd, 2023, organised by the Balagan Company. The workshop is for all levels except beginners and will cover right hand chords on different rhythms, how to diversify the left hand, independence of the hands, the use of the air valve, the effects of bellows and the different touches to learn how to evolve a melody according to your level and help you find your interpretation. Romuald Lefebvre: Interview "Meet the Musician Behind the Sound" - Italyby Harley Jones |
"Meet the Musician Behind the Sound" is a new series of interviews with young and upcoming accordionists so you can get to know them better. The Collaborators conducting the interviews are Adele Pirozzolo and Andrea Di Giacomo. The Romuald Lefebvre interview is now published edited by Andrea Di Giacomo. Romuald Lefebvre performed with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017. He is also teaching at the Conservatoire de Calais and Boulogne-Sur-Mer. Concerned with the development of the accordion, he was one of the founders of the l'Association des Professeurs de Haut de France. He recorded 2 solo albums, "Eclectique" in 2013 and "Toccata" in 2014.
