Jean Corti, born Jean Cortinovis in 1929 in Bergamo, Italy, moved to France as a young accordionist and became part of the post-war musette scene. During his career, he was firstly an accordionist and also a bass player for the French singer/composer George Brassens.

He worked closely with Jacques Brel in the 1960s as an accompanist, performing 300 concerts a year, and also composed the music for songs such as ‘Madeleine’ and ‘Les Vieux’. Corti and Brel memorably toured the USSR in 1965.

Corti became a night club owner in the 1970s, but continued performing with many artists, including the popular Parisian band Les Tetes Raides and accordionists such as Jo Privat, Marc Peronne, and Armand Lassagne.

In 1997 he composed the music for the Oscar nominated film ‘The Old Lady and the Pigeons’. In 2001, he released his first solo accordion album, ‘Couka’, followed by two more, ‘Versatile’ (2007) and ‘Fiorini’ (2009).

Corti was a very popular artist, greatly respected by his peers, and widely mourned in his adopted country.
