‘14 Years Ago’ – News from Panamaby Rob Howard |
The Accordions Worldwide news for April 24th 1998 included a report about accordionists playing at a festival to an audience in excess of 10,000. There are countries where we know accordion activity takes place yet Accordions Worldwide seldom gets to hear about it, and Panama is a case in point. We would love to know who is playing there nowadays. ACCORDIONISTS PERFORM TO OVER 10,000 PEOPLE - PANAMA Contributed by Carlos Burac On April 18th at the Chorrera International Fair, accordionists Victorio Vergara (picture right), Ulpiano Vergara and Osvaldo Ayala performed to over 10,000 people. Victorio Vergara played his Number 1 hit single on the Panama charts, ‘Bebe’. The accordionists' performance was a ‘mano a mano’, which is like a competition between the performers. In Panamá live accordion music can be heard almost every day because the accordion is one of the principal instruments in ‘musica tipica’, which is one of the most popular music styles in the country. |
