 For the occasion of Sofia Gubaidulina’s 85th birthday on October 24th, her concert "Fachwerk" for bayan, percussion and strings was performed by Friedrich Lips (soloist) and the chamber orchestra "Gnesin’s Virtuosi" with Mikhail Khokhlov, conducting. The performance was held in Moscow’s famous Tchaikovsky State Conservatory. Two days later another performance took place in Gubaidulina’s home town Kasan. The idea of "Fachwerk" (“framework“) comes from the architectural style of the same name. Traditional timber framing is the method of creating structures using heavy squared-off and carefully fitted and joined timbers with joints secured by large wooden pegs. These struts are visible on the outer sides of the house, thus giving it a distinctive look. Such house constructions are characteristic in Alpine regions: Switzerland, Austria, Alsace in France ... In this work, Sofia Gubaidulina, following the laws of this architectural style, quasi rotates the instrument from inside to out and shows maximum of possibilities based on the particular construction of the accordion: both a new understanding of the role of the standard bass manual and its connection to the free bass manual, as well as a variety of tone-glissandi, including polyphonic ... This whole constructive framework, due to the ingenuity and imagination of the composer, develops into a colorful emotional image and has a strong effect on the listener. CD available online.
