Jimmy Shand's Collection of Rare Music Books Conserved in Dundee - UK

Sir Jimmy ShandRare music books collected by the late Sir Jimmy Shand (1908-2000) are to be conserved for future generations of musicians.

The collection, dating back to the 1700s, was bought at auction by the Friends of Dundee's Wighton Heritage Centre following Shand's death in 2000.

Many of the books are in such poor condition that they are unusable, so a fundraising campaign has been launched to raise the thousands of pounds needed to restore them.

Singer Sheena Wellington, a Friend of Wighton, said: "What we have are things that are rare, unusual and nowhere else. Once we have them conserved then they're available for scholars, for musicians, for use by the community and we're intending that as each one is done to have a concert, ceilidh and set of workshops.

Jimmy didn't pick them up because they were going to look bonny on his shelves. He picked them up because what was in them mattered and that's what we think as well".
