Shirley Evans Passes Away, Florida - USA

Shirley Evans and John Lennon
Shirley EvansShirley Evans, born in Birkenhead, Merseyside, UK, in 1932, died on July 10th at the age of 78. Shirley will be remembered by many for playing the accordion in The Beatles' 1967 film ‘Magical Mystery Tour’.

She has the distinction of having an accordion solo, ‘Shirley's Wild Accordion’, written for her by John Lennon. This piece was recorded in London, but deleted from the final edit, and to this day lies unreleased in the vaults at EMI.

In the 1950s Shirley was often featured in the ‘Accordion Times’ advertising Scandalli accordions. From 1950, when she joined the Al Podesta Accordion Band, until the early 1980s, Shirley worked all over the world as a professional accordionist. In the 1970s she and CIA World Champion Donald Hulme played as the duo ‘Evans & Hulme’.

Also a composer, writer, singer and dancer, Shirley Evans was an all round entertainer. In recent years she lived in Florida, where she was Director/Consultant of The International Artists Series, Inc. in the Miami area. Shirley is survived by two sisters, June and Valerie and one brother, David. Her niece is the Australian accordionist Elizabeth Jones, President of the Accordion Society of Australia.
