10th Annual World Music Festival, Innsbruck - Austria

Winner of the Innsbruck World Music Festival: Nürnberger Akkordeonorchester (Germany) under the direction of Stefan Hippe
Top: Quardro Nuevo (Germany), Bottom: Trio Vadim Fyodorov (Iceland)Thousands of accordionists from around the world gathered in Innsbruck, Austria to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the World Music Festival. Held for the first time in 1964 in Luzern under the name ‘Alpine Accordion Festival’, the idea of a festival of Accordion Orchestras was the idea of Harry Bühlmann, then President of the Swiss Accordion Federation.

The Deutscher Harmonika-Verband e.V. (DHV) had found Bühlmann’s idea exciting and appealing, and so called the first meeting in Luzern. Taking advantage of Bühlmann’s contacts as a town councilor in Luzern, overnight accommodations were made possible in schools (with beds being provided by the Red Cross) and military Barracks. In 1965 the International Accordion Orchestra Federation (IAOV) was created with initial members being Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Austria.

The first president was Harry Bühlmann, however after his state of health worsened, the President's position was assumed by Professor Walter Maurer from Vienna, who to leads the organization to this day. After the IAOV member the Harmonikaverband Österreichs (HVÖ) received an advertising letter from the Innsbruck Congress Center, it passed on to the DHV. Subsequently DHV officials visited the Congress Center and realized the huge potential and possibilities so in 1983 the Alpine Accordion Festival took place for the first time in Innsbruck. The success was so enormous that an invitation was extended for the 2nd Innsbruck event to be held three years later. The name of the accordion orchestra festival was changed to the World Music Festival, however it maintained a three year cycle between events.

Opening with a gala VIP reception, in addition to competitions attracting more than 8,000 accordionists, the anniversary event also featured an array of world renowned guest performances by such names as: Akkordeonorchester Untergrombach (winner of the 2007 event) directed by W. Pfeffer, The Festival Orchestra (made up from students of the Hohner-Konservatorium and the Akkordeon-Landesjugendorchester) directed by Fritz Dobler, Accordeonova from Denmark (dir. Peter Anders), Alphen-Opus 2 from Netherlands (dir. Sergej Latychev), Accordeonova, Quadro Nuevo, Orchester Hohnerklang (dir. Hans-Günther Kölz), Kölner Akkordeon-Orchester (dir. Matthias Hennecke), the Nürnberger Akkordeonorchester (dir. Stefan Hippe) and Christine Schmid from Germany, Ars Harmoniae from Austria, Akkordeonorchester Switzerland (dir. Peter Frey) the Trio Vadim Fyodorov from Iceland and the Motion Trio from Poland.

Organized by the DHV, 36 orchestras competed in the premier Orchestra competition, with the prestigious 10th anniversary title being won by the Nürnberger Akkordeonorchester (Germany) under the direction of Stefan Hippe.
