 On May 11th accordionist Jay Landers was a guest soloist with the 60-piece Danville Symphony Orchestra at the magnificent auditorium of Danville High School, Illinois, for a performance of ‘My Paris’, a one-hour symphonic concert piece, arranged by the late Peter Matz. The work is based on the book of the same name by the legendary French entertainer Maurice Chevalier. ‘My Paris’ creates a unique opportunity for the accordion and the player as there are 20 sections to the piece and the accordion is scored in more than half of them. French melodies featured in ‘My Paris’ include ‘Under Paris Skies’, ‘Louise’, ‘Gigi’, ‘Paris Canaille’, ‘April in Paris’, ‘I Love Paris’, ‘Mon Plus Vieux Copain’, ‘La Seine’, ‘Speak to Me of Love’, and ‘La Vie En Rose’. Jay Landers plays with LMMMH (5) sets of reeds in the treble. The middle reeds are tuned higher. A single mic on a floor stand was positioned over the treble grille of the instrument. The score is primarily for right-hand only. Jay Landers commented, “I’ve had the opportunity to play in pit orchestras over the years for musical theatre productions of ‘Cabaret’, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, and others. This is the first time I’ve found myself onstage with a full symphony orchestra playing from a score written for the accordion. It was exhilarating.
