We salute the amazing life of Yevgeny Rodygin, born 16 February 1925 and died 19 July 2020 aged 95. He was the composer of many popular songs, while young he learnt the button accordion, he was front-line soldier awarded the "Medal of Courage" in 1944. He received many awards including Honorary Citizen of the Sverdlovsk Region and Yekaterinburg. People's Artist of Russia (1999).

His most famous work was “Hawthorn Tree” (Chinese: Shanzhashù), originally the “Ural Rowan Tree”, was a first Soviet-era love song written by Mikhail Pilinenko and composed by Evgeny Rodygin in 1953. The song describes a love triangle, wherein a girl, facing two suitors, approaches the Rowan tree for help.

Together with a large number of Soviet songs, it was introduced to China in the 1950's, where this song became immensely popular and remains extremely popular to this day.

Shortly before the war, Yevgeny was enlisted and during the war, he went from private to senior sergeant. In 1944 he was awarded the Medal For Courage. On April 23, 1945 he was seriously wounded on the Oder River.

After the end of the war, he entered the composing department of the Ural State Conservatory. In 1950 he graduated from the conservatory, after which became the head of the musical part of the Ural Folk Choir, where he served until 1956 promoting the development of Russian folk music. The songs written in the 1950s brought popularity to the young composer. He toured the Soviet Union a lot, he also visited Poland, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, Bulgaria, Romania.

In 1957 Yevgeny Rodygin was admitted to the Union of Composers of the USSR. His musical scores were published and Rodygin's songs were regularly played on radio and television. His main works of the 1950s-1960s were musical comedies

In the 1960s-1970s, the composer toured the Soviet Union a lot, performing his songs, took part in the decades of Russian art in the republics of the USSR. As part of the "trains of the arts" he also visited remote corners of the country.

On May 4, 1986 he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd degree. In 1998 he was elected an honorary citizen of Yekaterinburg.

2020 has been declared the year of Yevgeny Rodygin in the Sverdlovsk region. In February 2020, the "Facets of Yevgeny Rodygin's Art" festival was held.

Until the end of his life, Evgeny Pavlovich Rodygin continued to engage in musical creativity.
