National Competition for Children and Youth, Lappeenranta - Finland

Seppo and Päivi Valkeajoki, Raimo Vertainen
Pilva HuhtaThe national accordion competition for children and youth was organised in Eastern Finland in Lappeenranta last weekend. The competition is called ”Minä soitan harmonikkaa” (which means ”I Play Accordion”), and it is organized continuously since 1973.

In six categories there were 125 participants, age from 6 years up to 18 years. The basic idea of the 3-days event is to give children the chance to perform, to listen and to meet each other. At the same time the competition is the most important annual event and meeting of the Finnish accordion teachers.

The winners of the top category (up to 18 year) were Viivi Tigerstedt and Jaakko Jukonen. Both winners are studying at the Sibelius Academy Youth Department, and they are preparing professional studies and musical career for future. Viivi entered the Junior Coupe
Mondiale in 2015, and Jaakko will compete in the 2017 Junior Coupe Mondiale. Their programs consisted of baroque and contemporary music.

In this competition the final results themselves are pedagogically very soft. The aim is to encourage children to develop their musical skills further. As the prize, every single player receives a diploma and a small trophy, but the most important detail is the personal written comments by the jury. This is very essential feedback instead of cold points.

The programs consist of all kind of pedagogical music. In the middle categories there are test pieces, which were composed by by Veli and Susanne Kujala, Antti Leinonen and Markus Fagerudd.

The ”Minä Soitan Harmonikkaa” – shortly called ”MSH” – is organised by the Accordion Teachers’ Association in cooperation with the Finnish Accordion Association and the Finnish Accordion Institute.

This year the competition was hosted by the Music Institute of city Lappeenranta. The next competition will be in April 2018 in Lapua, Western Finland.
