New CD release - Cantares Mexicanos - International Year for Indigenous Languages in 2019

CD cover
A new CD entitled “Cantares Mexicanos” has just been released under the Mexican label Tempus Clasico, on the occasion of UNESCO's International Year of Indigenous Languages in 2019.

This recording contrasts Aztec poetry in the Nahuatl language with 7 accordion works by Mexican composers - Georgina Derbez, Victor Ibarra, Ana Lara, Alejandro Romero, Javier Torres Maldonado, Jorge Torres Saenz and Itzam Zapata.

Accordionist Vincent LHermet accompanied by narrators Astrid Hadad (Spanish) and Christian Rojas (Nahuatl) will tour four countries (Italy, France, Mexico, Germany) giving 10 concerts based on the CD.

“Cantares Mexicanos” is a collection of poems (in the Nahuatl language) transcribed by Spaniards in Latin alphabet in the 16th century. The language of the Aztecs -the Náhuatl- (Mexico's second spoken language after Spanish), today has about 1.5 million speakers.

This project, carried out with the support of the Embassies of France and Mexico and the Charles Oulmont Foundation, is a reminder, through creation, of the need for people to preserve their history and their languages, since a "country can not grow without its roots".
