Stockport Accordion Band Fund Raising Concert, Cheshire – UK

Stockport Accordion Band
Accordionists of the Stockport area have a proud history of fundraising concerts which over the years have raised major amounts of money for worthy causes. John Jones received the MBE in the January 2012 Honours List for services to charity, having raised over £200,000 for various charities playing the accordion.

Note our News Editor and author Rob Howard as 1st Accordion in the picture and below announcing. Rob has played for numerous fund raising concerts over the years "for Cancer Research UK, Christie Hospital, Alzheimer's Society, Alzheimer's Research UK, East Cheshire Hospice, and Francis House Children's Hospice - and some I've forgotten about!"

This fundraising tradition continued on Friday June 6th, when the Stockport Accordion Club Band (MD Derek Stubbs) performed in concert at the United Reform Church in Macclesfield, which was a fund raiser for church building repairs. There was a near capacity audience, and the D-Day themed concert went very well indeed.

The program included Sweet Georgia Brown, Ain’t Misbehaving, Accordion Friends, Colonel Bogey, Moonlight Serenade, Pennsylvania 6500, In the Mood, Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, etc, climaxing with The Dam Busters – also played as an encore. The audience loved it all, and there was plenty of participation. They even got “Pennsylvania 6500” (and the “000” bit) spot on!

There were also some excellent solos from band member Helen Rich and club Vice President Walter Perrie, plus some impromptu duets.

Mike Davies and Wally McKenzie (the cousin of Stockport AC’s late Vice President John Nixon), two longstanding Stockport AC followers, missed the concert, but for a very good reason. Both were D-Day veterans, and were in Normandy for the official commemoration events.
