Super Orchestra Day, Ripley - UK

2018 Super Orchestra Day
Question: What do 75 accordion players do on a rainy Sunday in the UK?
Answer: Gather at the village hall in Ripley, UK to be part of the 2018 Super Orchestra Day organised by Julie North and conducted by lan Watson.

The first two hour rehearsal started at 11 am to work through the 3 pieces that have been selected for the day, before enjoying a much need lunch break. The afternoon rehearsal added the percussion.

The orchestra had the opportunity to play and premiere two pieces that were composed by Ian Watson especially for the day. ‘Song without Words’ dedicated to the Watford Accordion Band and ‘One Tango’ dedicated to Tillingbourne Accordion Orchestra. Also included in the program ‘One’ from The Chorus Line.

For the second time at this event, there was a youth orchestra of 5 players. The youngest player was 5 and her first time playing an accordion. They performed two pieces at the evening concert, Chopsticks and Crooked Crochets.

At 5.30 the concert began with Watford Accordion Band conducted by Shona Holmes who performed Three Roses by Gotz and Free World Fantasy by Jacob de Haan. Tillingbourne orchestra then performed Finlandia, conducted by Marion Szuman.

The youth orchestra performed their pieces and then came The London Intermediate Accordion Orchestra performing Watkins’s Ale, Movement 1 of tiny Celtic symphony and ultimo tango, conducted by Julie North. The finale to the concert was the Mass Orchestra with the pieces being well received by the audience.

A lovely indoor day of music, fun and friends while the rain continued to fall.

Super Orchestra 2019 will be on the 27 October, so book this in your diary now! A day not to be missed.
