Sofia Gubaildulina and Francesco Gesualdi in Concert, Florence – Italy

Francesco GesualdiSofia Gubaidulina will be in Florence for two concerts dedicated to her music, on June 27th and 28th, during the ninth season of New Musical Concert Events.

The famous Russian composer will attend during the second ‘Music Prize NEM’ event. The concert on June 27th will take place in the prestigious setting of the ‘Salone dei Cinquecento’ in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

The concert program includes: Sofia Gubaidulina - ‘Seven Words’, and Alfred Schnittke – ‘Epilogue’ (from ‘Peer Gynt’), for cello, piano and electronics.

’Seven Words’ is one of the most significant and masterful compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina. Written in 1982, it is designed in seven parts, for cello, accordion and string orchestra.

The orientation of the text and music is one of seven words of Christ on the Cross, the famous Oratory of Heinrich Sch?tz. Dedicated to cellist Vladimir Tonchi and accordionist Friedrich Lips, the work had was premiered in 1985 with the name ‘Lot’.

The work is characterized by a clear symbolism that crosses its components. To give an example of the instruments, the accordion is a symbol of God the Father, the cello – the Son of God, the orchestra - the Holy Spirit.

To perform the ‘Seven Words’ will be Francesco Gesualdi, one of the leading and original accordionists in the Italian music scene, and the renowned cellist Alexander Ivashkin, expert and scholar of Russian music of the twentieth century.

The two musicians will perform together with the chamber orchestra ‘Our Times’, positive reality of good music in the territory of Florence.
