Christmas Street Parties, California – USA

Dmitri GaskinListed below are lots of upcoming music performances, mostly free and at family-friendly times, on these dates: December 19th, 20th, 21st, 25th, 29th; January 5th; February 7th. Details are below:

Friday December 19th, 7pm - Klezmer/Balkan mashup dance party, Subterranean Arthouse, 2179 Bancroft Way, Berkeley. Free. Potluck, open mic, and dance party starting around 9pm. This event celebrates 6 years of the Arthouse

Saturday December 20th, 4-6pm - Saul Goodman’s Klezmer Band at SF JCC, 3200 California St., San Francisco. Free. Mike Perlmutter (clarinet), Dmitri Gaskin (accordion - picture right), Andrew Cohen (helicon), Ivan Velev (tapan), Bruce Bierman (dance leading). This is part of a family event, which includes candle lighting, a dreidel garden, tot spot, storey telling, and seasonal cocktails, latkes, and on the spot made mini donuts!

Sunday December 21st, 4.30-6.30pm, Chelm Feelharmonik Klezmer Trio, with Rick Elmore (tuba), Jeanette Lewicki (accordion and voice), and Mike Perlmutter (clarinet), Bird and Beckett Books and Records, 653 Chenery St., San Francisco. Free.

Thursday December 25th, 11am-3pm, 6th Annual Saul's Deli Klezmer X-Mas Street Party - Mike Perlmutter (clarinet and sax), Dmitri Gaskin (accordion), Peter Bonos (trumpet and euphonium), Gerry Tenney (mandolin and singing), Tony Phillips (banjo), Aharon Wheels Bolsta (percussion), Jonathan Simon (percussion), plus more musicians tba, outside of Saul’s 1475 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley.

Klezmer Monday December 29th and January 5th, 6-8pm - Saul Goodman’s Klezmer Band at Saul’s Deli, 1475 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley. With Mike Perlmutter (clarinet), Dmitri Gaskin (accordion), Dave Rosenfeld (vio- & mando-lin: 12/29), Marco Peris (tapan), and special guests. “Saul Goodman’s Klezmer Band comes from a musical tradition tracing back to the old world shtetl of Szrensk. Incorporating post-immigrant sounds rooted in klezmer, Saul Goodman’s music moves the spirit and the dance. It’s always a simcha with Saul!”

Saturday February 7th, 9pm - Inspector Gadje at Kafana Balkan, 155 Fell St, San Francisco. Inspector Gadje, a 12 piece band, will be joined by the celebrated Macedonian/Turkish clarinet maestro Ismail Lumanovski flying in from New York to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the Bay’s most bumpin’ Balkan dance party. Inspector Gadje brings a big sound to the beautiful brass band music of the Balkans – inciting joy and dancing from the first downbeat.
