Tommy, 104, gives melodeon performance, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne – UKby Rob Howard |
At the age of 104 Tommy Sivell can still hold a tune on his melodeon. Despite being one of the oldest men on Tyneside in the North East of England, the veteran musician loves to entertain in his Kingston Park, Newcastle, care home, to prove he can still play with the pros. Tommy, who lived in Fawdon, Newcastle, before moving to Cranlea care home, taught himself to play the melodion when he was just 17. Since then, he has gathered a collection of over 30 instruments. He still loves to entertain and, when a banjo band visited Cranlea last week, Tommy couldn’t wait to get up on stage. So staff organised a special concert in his honour and last week he was the true star of the show. “I’ve never been quite what you would call professional,” said modest Tommy. “I have always loved playing and I like to keep it up. People in the home like to see me playing as well.” |
