| The third annual ‘Big Squeeze’ accordion contest, organised by Texas Folklife and Hohner, takes place on June 6th at the 20th Annual Accordion Kings & Queens Festival, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston. Contestants must be age 25 or younger and the entry deadline is March 1st; Prizes include cash, a trip for two to play in Germany (courtesy of Hohner), and a day of recording at Sugar Hill Studios in Houston. Guests at this event include Sunny Sauceda, Santiago Jimenez Jr., Cedryl Ballou, Mark Halata, and Lady ‘D’. The contest was started in 2007 as a way to promote the growth and development of young accordionists in the region. Any genre of music that incorporates the use of the accordion will be accepted, such as Cajun, German, Czech, Polish, Tejano, Country & Western, and Zydeco.
