20th Anniversary, Sastamalan Koulutuskuntayhtymä Accordion Repair School - Finland

Sastamalan Koulutuskuntayhtymä Accordion Repair School, Jörgen Sundeqvist & Tapio Nysten
Kauri accordionOn Saturday 13th February the Sastamalan Koulutuskuntayhtymä Ikaalinen Handicraft school celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Accordion Department.

Students are able to study professionally accordion construction, tuning and repairing. The school offers official state supported studying programs to provide professional skills for other professional fields too.

The accordion course was accepted into the school program 20 years ago in 1995. The principal teacher is Tapio Nysten, and several experts have lectured in the school as visitor teachers.

In many countries, there is a shortage of properly trained accordion repair technicians and this school has been important in Finland, training young people to provide these valued services to the accordion community.

The school has wide international contacts and network, thanks to the Finnish Accordion Institute, including Italian and German accordion factories and workshops.

Three years ago the school was an essential part of the 'Kauri-accordion project', when three diatonic accordions were constructed by the artisan Aaro Luukinen. The special Kauri timber was provided from New Zealand by Kevin Friedrich to build these beautiful instruments (picture right), now regularly used in concerts in Finland, USA and New Zealand. www.accordions.com/kevin/n_kauriaccordion.htm

Future plans of the school include more cooperation with foreign experts such as Swedish accordionist Jörgen Sundeqvist who lectured in the school recently and is pictured with teacher Tapio Nysten.

CIA Secretary General and Finnish Accordion Institute President Kimmo Mattila, will be a speaker at the 20th anniversary celebrations.

Jouni Kaipainen (1956-2015), Tampere - Finland

Aulis Sallinen, Jouni Kaipainen, Mika VäyrynenComposer Jouni Kaipainen passed away on November 23rd 2015 after losing his 18 month battle against cancer. He was born on November 24th 1956 and considered one of the greatest Finnish composers of his time. His funeral was held in Tampere on December 19th in the presence of family, friends and colleagues. Mr. Kaipainen is survived by his wife Jaana and five sons.

Jouni Ilari Kaipainen was born in Helsinki and studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki under Aulis Sallinen and Paavo Heininen.

Pictures left: Jouni Kaipainen (top) and Jouni Kaipainen (center) is pictured with Aulis Sallinen and Mika Väyrynen.

A prolific composer, he wrote for the stage, some 10 major works for symphony orchestra, more than a dozen concertos for instrumental and vocal soloists (with soloists such as clarinet, oboe, saxophone quartet, piano, viola, horn, cello, trumpet, bassoon, violin, trombone, soprano, baritone, etc) and orchestra, almost 30 chamber works and the same number of vocal and choral works.

Among the numerous works for various instruments, Jouni Kaipainen composed four works for accordion:

- ‘Gena Op. 31’ for solo accordion (1987, dedicated to Marjut Tynkkynen)
- ‘Vento Op. 58’ for solo accordion (1998, dedicated to Mika Väyrynen)
- ‘Placido Op. 68’ for solo accordion (2003/2005, dedicated to Mika Väyrynen)
- ‘Elemental Chanting Op. 87’ for accordion & cello (2009, dedicated to Matti Rantanen and Marko Ylönen)

Maestro Kaipainen was planning a new solo work for accordion, ‘Tumultuoso’, which would create an accordion trilogy together with the already incredibly demanding ‘Vento’ and ‘Placido’.

Finnish accordionist Mika Väyrynen spoke with Jouni shortly before his passing, and he told Mika of his ongoing plans to complete this technically challenging trilogy. Mika reports that in his very special humorous manner he said: "Mika, an extra motivation for me to do this third movement of the accordion trilogy, is your promise to play all of them in one concert! That must be an almost impossible task. I want to see and hear that happen!"

Sadly, the world will never hear how ‘Tumultuoso’ would have been, as the world has lost a renowned and respected composer, ahead of his time. Jouni Kaipainen will be greatly missed.

The World Accordion to Uri, Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat - Israel

Uri SharlinThe Jerusalem Post, Barry Davis 10th February reports (some excerpts):

New York-based Israeli accordionist Uri Sharlin brings his cross-cultural musical baggage to this weekend’s Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat, 11 to 13th February.

The accordion has a price of place in the history of this still young state. The iconic image of groups of kibbutznikim, or other hale and hearty pioneering characters, sitting around a campfire while a squeezebox operator – preferably wearing a kova tembel, as the inverted basin-shaped hat was affectionately known – played some stirring singalong tunes, has pride of place in Israeli folklore.

Over the years, however, the accordion has spread its genre and stylistic wings in the consciousness of the general public and, when 40-year-old New York resident Uri Sharlin performs at this year’s winter version of the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat (February 13, 5:45 p.m.), the audience at the Royal Garden Hotel will get a rich brew of “jazz spiced up with Balkan, Brazilian and Arab scents,” as the festival blurb has it.

Actually, there are even more strands to Sharlin’s cross-cultural musical baggage, with Irish rhythms and Klezmer melodies also making their way into his output.

Sharlin has put together a suitably multipronged act to help him pump out the requisite textures and energies, and he will be joined by the other mostly New Yorkbased four members of his DogCat Ensemble which features flutist Itai Kriss, guitarist Jonathan Albalak, bassist Daniel Ori and drummer Dan Aran.

Chamberlain & Haywood Review, Isle of Arran Concert, Scotland – UK

Michael Haywood and Paul Chamberlain
Below is a review of the duo Chamberlain & Haywood’s concert from the Arran Voice:

On Saturday January 16th an expectant audience gathered in Brodick Hall to hear music played by Paul Chamberlain, accordion, and Michael Haywood, playing clarinet, saxophone and whistle as well as violin. This duo had delighted people in the Little Rock café last September, when they visited Arran during National Chamber Music Week, and this time, rising to the expectations of a much larger audience, they delivered an enchanting mixture of music from all over the world, ranging from Balkan traditional tunes to Brahms, with much in between.

Such a dazzling range of style requires consummate skill, and this was impressively evident. The programme included a haunting composition by Paul Chamberlain himself, ‘Orcadian Sunrise’, but did not neglect the immense range available. From Piazzolla to the lovely slow movement of Mozart's ‘Clarinet Concerto’, the programme unfolded one delight after another.

Carlos Gardel was followed by another composition by the duo, Michael Haywood's ‘Lewis Chessmen’. Anyone familiar with these vast, brooding figures instantly recognised the power and mystery evoked by the composition. The performance ended with a 'troika set' (three horses drawing a Russian sleigh) that ended with the irresistible ‘Kalinka’, with the accelerating speed that always induces excitement. Brodick Hall rose to the stimulus with huge enthusiasm, and went out into the January night warmed, refreshed and excited. A night to remember.

Chamberlain & Haywood have their first CD currently being pressed and this will be released in March, and will have more details for an article in due course.

Slippery Sneakers Performing Woonsocket Mardi Gras - USA

Slippery Sneakers
When Robert Graves Leonard is squeezing his red-white-and-blue accordion, and his band Slippery Sneakers keeping the beat with him, playing wallflower is not an option.

This band of troubadours has mastered the sound known as zydeco, a Louisiana-spawned genre powered by the piano accordion, with a fiddle and rub board percussion for extra oomph, as well as all the instruments needed for a rock and roll combo. Listen a moment or two, and you might catch yourself trying to do an old-country clog dance and Michael Jackson moonwalk at the same time.

The insistent zydeco beat will be the sound track when northern Rhode Island celebrates Mardi Gras Saturday night at St. Ann Arts & Cultural Center in Woonsocket.
