9th Victoria International Accordion Festival
9th Victoria International Accordion Festival posterThe 9th Victoria International Accordion Festival takes place from July 12th to 19th at venues in Victoria, BC, Canada. The festival opens on July 12th with a free concert at the Beacon Hill Park and ends with another free concert on July 19th at Market Square, with performers coming from New Zealand, China, Europe, and North America.

One of the chief guests this year is Grayson Masefield from New Zealand, whose mastery in both classical and variety fields is bringing audiences to their feet all over the world - concert 17th July. Also appearing is the the Accordion Orchestra Ugljevik, from Bosnia, renowned for their superb interpretations of Balkan music.

Local accordionist Rebecca Bracewell, a young rising star, will perform at the festival, and in a few weeks’ time, will be the first accordionist ever to perform in one of the largest summer events in North America, the ‘Symphony Splash’, with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

Also performing will be Jelena Milojevic, one of the foremost classical accordionists in North America, the BC Accordion Orchestra, Victoria Accordion Club Band, Bucan Bucan, along with many other performers.

On Saturday July 18th, 1pm, there will be the Victoria International Accordion Competition. This takes place at the Victoria Conservatory, Wood Hall, and has competition categories for solo players in various ages and styles on music.

Artistic producer Jelena Milojevic, who has taught some of the most prominent accordionists in Victoria city, sees the competition side of the wide-ranging festival as an indicator of the instrument’s growing appeal among a new generation. “There are many young, very talented accordionists coming, so from that point of view we can expect, in the future, having more and more accordion in this city.”

The Victoria International Accordion Competition, with contestants from Europe, North America and Asia, starts July 18th at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. The winners will appear the afternoon of July 19th at Market Square, the festival’s final day of programming.

Milojevic said “We’ve been working really, really hard in the past five, six years to put Victoria on the accordion map. Now, as I can see it, we are there. Accordion in Victoria is very vibrant.”
