Christmas Fun For the Young in Dargaville - New Zealand

school crew
SantaPicture above left to right: Christine Johnstone, Kevin Friedrich, Santa, Ros Gilmour, Linda Emmet Litt, Frosty and Margaret Tier.

Accordionist Kevin Friedrich and several of his fellow musicians and assistants took some Christmas Fun to his former school, the Dargaville Primary School in his home town of Dargaville, New Zealand. Performing to approximately 400 young children over a series of shows, the Christmas theme was a popular hit with the young students ranging in age from 5 – 10 years, nearing the end of their school year.

Combining performance, education, movement, dance and student participation the cast of characters included popular guests Rudolf, Frosty and Santa. The students participated by singing, dancing, movement and assisting with percussion.

Kevin was joined by Christine Johnstone (student conductor), Ros Gilmour (vocalist and Rudolf) and Linda Emmett Litt (Timpani and percussion. Interestingly, Linda is the daughter of Kevin’s original accordion teacher at the Dargaville Primary School, Doreen Emmett. Also assisting were Elizabeth Card (Frosty), Tony Cunningham (Santa) and Margaret Tier (Costumes).

Kevin began his accordion lessons at this very school when the accordion was offered as part of the additional school curriculum offerings. Group lessons were offered at the Primary School and after one year, students who wished to continue transitioned to private lessons.

In addition to the School concerts, Kevin along with his fellow musicians Linda Emmett Litt and Ros Gilmour will bring the Dargaville Museum to life as they perform among the displays during an open live music day on 11th December.

The Dargaville Museum houses the magnificent ‘Accordion Gems, a Master Collection of Accordions through Time’ exhibition showcasing 140 instruments from the early 1830s to the present. The accordions are housed in the Music wing of the Museum which also houses extensive collections of Maritime articles and local and regional history pertaining to the early settlers. Friedrich Lips Presented "Order of Honor" – Russia

Lips Order of HonorThe Minister of Culture Olga Borisovna Lyubimova presented State awards at the Bolshoi Theater recently.

For the third time, Friedrich Lips has received an important award by the Russian Ministry of Culture. After being honored in 1969 (1st prize at the Klingenthal competition) and 2001 (Order of Friendship), Lips now was presented the "Order of Honor", very special for an
bayanist/accordionist.

Lips speech: “Everyone said words of gratitude. After receiving the Order of Honor, I decided to say a few words. In short: “Over the years of my creative biography I have been at the reception of the Minister for the third time. The second was in 2001, when M.E. Shvydkoi presented the Order of Friendship, and for the first time was in the office of the Minister of Culture of the USSR with E.A. Furtseva in 1969, who invited us after winning an international competition in Klingenthal.

Probably, some of the people in this room hadn’t been born then! (Reply of the Minister: I was not born then!). As a winner, I received a concert rate and the right to a solo concert. Then there were few contests. The laureate was a piece product. I had 50 concerts a year. There are many competitions and laureates now.

The best young musicians should be touring. It is necessary to organize the work of Rosconcert on organizing tours of young musicians, to pay special attention to performers on the accordion, domra, and balalaika. We are talking about patriotism, and the instruments loved by the people are practically on the sidelines of musical culture.

We performed not only in regional centers, but also in small towns. Today we have already lost the habit of solo concerts of musicians. It is necessary to restore the system of touring activities, as it was before. Not everything was bad during the Soviet period."

The minister listened favorably and kindly.

The Accordion in the Media Spanning the Decades Part 1: The late 1920s to 1960

AAA Header
Preface by Joan Grauman (picture right).

I have been a collector of “ephemera (written or printed items of short-term usefulness or popularity)” for several decades. Luckily, I focused this goofy obsession of mine on my other obsession: the accordion! I hope you enjoy this trip through memory lane with printed ads, stories and cards that celebrate, or ridicule, our beloved musical instrument.

The Accordion in the Media Spanning the Decades
Media1 : The late 1920s to 1960

Mass media was, and is today, a very important mirror of who we were and who we are as a society. While this form of communicating and promoting thoughts, facts, events and ideas has changed monumentally over the past 100 years, one thing has not changed: mass media clearly reflects our past and our present.

Over the decades, the accordion in the media has been "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly…. and the Good again". Part 1 of this article will focus on "the Good"; Part 2: "the Bad, the Ugly … and the Good again."

Benjamin Franklin, one of our US Founding Fathers, is credited with creating the first printed advertisements in a magazine, "General Magazine", in 1741. By the early 20th century, printed advertisements were in newspapers, periodicals and posters. These ads attracted people to what was being sold by featuring popular and attractive people, scenes and objects.

Stories of the glamorous Vaudeville, Hollywood and radio celebrities were also featured in the magazines. Soon the beautiful and intriguing “new” musical instrument, the accordion, was in ads and stories everywhere.

Rik Cornelissen 2022 Workshops - Netherlands

Novam poster
Rik Cornelissen will hold three improvisation workshops at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Arnhem, Netherlands organised by NOVAM (Dutch Organisation for Accordion and Harmonica) and ArtEZ University of the Arts.

The workshops are for anyone who wants to improvise, regardless of the level. Because improvising is about the freedom with which you approach music, and all aspects of music-making are covered (sound quality, theory, chord theory, melody learning, ear training, etc.), it is valuable for everyone. The course is given 'tailor-made', making mixed levels possible.

Each course is the same in design, but by using different pieces in different styles (jazz, tango, Latin etc.) there is variety and innovation of material with every course.

Dates are:
January 15th, 2022 – 11am to 3pm
February 12th, 2022 – 11am to 3pm
