Breaking News: Gervasio Marcosignori (1927-2013) - Italy

Gervasio MarcosignoriGervasio Marcosignori passed away at the age of 85 today 9th of March 2013.

Gervasio Marcosignori, born in Castelfidardo December 3, 1927 was a master of the accordion and recognized throughout the world with a history full of performances in front of great personalities such as past Italian President Sandro Pertini, Pope John Paul II, Queen Elizabeth and many more. Right after seeing him perform at the London Royal Festival Hall, playing Preludio by Volpi, the British press coined him with the appellation "poet of the accordion".

His path to fame began at the age of seven, when he played for Benito Mussolini in 1934. Delighted with his performance, the Duce embraced the little Gervasio saying, "Keep it up, good Balilla." The first teacher was his father John Gervasio. At age 15, Gervasio won his first music competition.

In 1959 he was awarded the Oscar for the world accordion. Of particular importance was its educational legacy: three volumes on "Technique of the Accordion".

Marcosignori, in addition to all his technical performing skills, was appreciated for his unique interpretation of original music and transcriptions for accordion. Marcosignori has been in particularly great lover of classical music and this showed in his repertoire.

The entire Accordion World is missing a great accordionist but most a great musician.

‘14 Years Ago’ – Dermot O’Brien Remembered

Dermot O’BrienThe Accordions Worldwide news for the week ending March 12th 1999 included an enquiry about Dermot O’Brien, the Irish accordion entertainer and singer, who for many years was resident in New York.

Dermot O’Brien (1932-2007) was the most internationally popular and commercially successful accordionist Ireland has produced to date. He had a stage presence that few accordionists from any genre could match, and was much admired by his contemporaries. There is an article about the late, great Dermot O’Brien in the Accordions Worldwide Memorials section.

DO YOU KNOW DERMOT O'BRIEN - SOUTH AFRICA
Contributed by Sergio Zampolli

A South African accordionist would like to receive information on the accordionist Dermot O`Brien. He thinks Dermot plays an I Busilacchio 13 treble coupler, 7 bass coupler instrument with a double cassotto, which is similar to his own model. It is possible that Dermot is now in the USA.
