Editors Note

Rob Howard book Vintage AccordionsWorld Accordion Day is celebrated annually on May 6th, with accordion events of many kinds taking place on or near that date. It was on May 6th 1829 that Cyril Damian (that’s the anglicised version of Cyrillius Demien), an Armenian-born organ builder, patented his first accordion design in Vienna, Austria.

Cyril Damian and his contemporaries, who built accordions that are also known as flutinas, would surely be astounded at subsequent developments in the accordion, and how the instrument has flourished globally. We today, on the other hand, owe it to our forebears to promote the accordion in every way we can.

Please let Accordions Worldwide know what accordion events are taking place near you to celebrate World Accordion Day. You do this by Registering your activity on the World Accordion Day website.

A new event for 2012 is a live streaming 24 Hour Celebration of the Accordion, similar to the TV coverage of New Years Eve, whereby celebrations are viewed on an ongoing basis as the time zones elapse around the world.

The production will be available for viewing live throughout the day with 24 separate hours of archived video coverage which will be available for viewing anytime after the event. For further information email CIA Music Committee member Grayson Masefield.
