Nico CarstensChannel 24 news headline was “South African music legend Nico Carstens died on Tuesday” November 2nd at the Netcare N1 Hospital in Cape Town at the age of 90.

Born on February 10th 1926 in Cape Town of Dutch parents, Nico Carstens got his first accordion at the age of 13 and won an adult music competition six months later. He composed his first piece of music at the age of 17 and went on to write approximately 1200 songs and tunes, the most famous being ‘Zambesi’, written in the 1950s and recorded by Eddie Calvert, Acker Bilk, Bert Kaempfert, James Last, The Shadows, Floyd Cramer, Johnny Dankworth, and more.

As an accordionist, Carstens formed his first band in 1950. He recorded over 90 albums, which have sold over 2 million copies in South Africa. He performed for many years to great acclaim all over South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and also in France.

A concert to mark the 90th birthday of the Nico Carstens was held on Wednesday July 13th at the arts festival Vrystaat Kunstefees, Bloemfontain. Artists performing included the popular accordionist Stanislav Angelov. Article about the 90th Birthday concert at:
