On the occasion of this year’s ‘Days of the Accordion’ at the University of Music in Wuerzburg, June 26th to 28th, Friedrich Lips, Professor at the Russian Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow, was invited to hold a master class.

He is well- known as a concert artiste and an initiator of new Russian music far beyond the borders of Russia, and has been constantly invited to international music festivals over the course of many years.

In his evening concert Lips impressed the public not only thanks to his virtuosity but also the large musical range of his program: starting with Boëllmann's ‘Gothic Suite’, passing by original music by Gubaidulina and Cholminov, and finishing with transcriptions of works by Khatchaturyan, Schumann, Schubert, Piazzolla, Brubeck, as well as Johann Strauss.

On the second day Lips held a lecture about the new Russian bayan music (end of 20th / beginning of the 21st Century) called ‘Made in Russia’. Having premiered about 70 new works for bayan, he is able to tell many interesting details about the creation of these new works, offering valuable contributions to understanding this music.

In the context of a cooperative concert (called ‘Accordion Night’), students of the classes of Friedrich Lips (Moscow) and Professor Stefan Hussong (Wuerzburg) showed their considerable skills. The young accordionists Stefanie Mirwald, Silke Huber, Sissi Retschmeier, Oroitz Maiz Morea, Marja Kandic, Denis Patkovic, Olivia Steimel, as well as Semion Shmelkov from Moscow, were the artistes of this evening. CD's online from Semion Shmelkov.

During his master course, Friedrich Lips introduced to the students special ways of tone creation and the musical versatility of the bayan/accordion. An exhibition of instruments, scores and CDs completed the various offers of the ‘Days of the Accordion’.

Many thanks to the initiator, Professor Stefan Hussong!
