Mickey Binelli Passes Away, London - UK

Mickey BinelliLondon-born Mickey Binelli (1921-2009) died on Sunday March 29th, aged 87. In the immediate post-war years Mickey got his first major break as a member of the London Accordion Band (MD George Scott-Wood).

In the 1950s/60s, he was a regular member of the highly regarded Henry Krein Quartet, one of the best-known and most popular small accordion groups of the period, famous for many BBC radio broadcasts.

Although not remembered as a solo performer, Mickey Binelli was, from the early 1950s onwards, a highly respected figure in the world of recording studio session musicians, appearing on many records and film soundtracks, such as the 1968 hit movie musical ‘Oliver’. Mickey played the Italian composition ‘La Piave’ on the soundtrack of the 1996 film ‘In Love and War’.

Through his session work Mickey made many notable contributions to the recordings of other musicians, such as playing musette accordion on some of the tracks on harmonica virtuoso Tommy Reilly’s 1971 album ‘Harmonica Parisien’. He played accordion with Henry Mancini’s orchestra on the 1991 CD ‘Cinema Italiano’, which featured the film theme compositions of Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota.

Mickey Binelli inspired many British accordionists of the post-war years, most notably Jack Emblow, Tony Compton and John Leslie.
