Gnesin RAM Faculty of Folk Instruments 70 Years Celebration - Russia

In the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the faculty of folk instruments of the Russian Academy of Music (RAM) a celebration concert took place in the full concert hall of the Gnesin Academy after a conference being held on the "Role of the faculty in the musical culture of the country“.

A significant event in the history of folk instrumental art was the creation of the first in the republic faculty and department of folk instruments at the Gnesin State Music and Pedagogical Institute in 1948. The head of the department (until 1963) was Alexander Ilyushin, a highly educated musician, performer, conductor, active propagandist and follower of the great musical and educational affairs of V. Andreev, Merited Artist of Russia.

During first years together with him worked in the department and faculty: Yu.N. Shishakov, V.G. Gorokhov, G.F. Zimin, S.P. Velikov, P.I. Alekseev, P.A. Gvozdev, A. P. Ivanov-Radkevich, S.S. Sakharov, M.A. Osokin, S.G. Delitsiyev, I.D. Druzhinin, N.L. Reznikov, O.M. Agarkov, A.E. Onegin, N.Y. Chaikin, A.B. Pozdnyakov, V.L Degtyarenko and other famous musicians.

The staff of the department had difficult creative tasks. The rapidly developing national instrumental performance and the ever-expanding system of primary, secondary and higher musical education needed hundreds of highly qualified teachers, performers, organizers and conductors of orchestras and ensembles, heads of departments and educational institutions. To the credit of the teachers of the department and its leader, the orientation was chosen to be correct: not a narrow instrumental specialization, but a wide, versatile profile of training future figures of folk instrumental art.

Hence, the complex construction of the curriculum of the faculty, which, along with a wide range of special subjects, included music-theoretical and general educational disciplines, as well as conducting of a folk orchestra. In a relatively short time, teachers of the department developed programs for all special courses of the curriculum, which served as the basis for opening faculties of folk instruments in musical universities of many large cities of Russia and other Union republics in the 1950s and 1960s.

It was precisely into music colleges and schools, philharmonic societies and concert organizations, into professional orchestral ensembles and ensembles that graduates of the first editions were distributed.

Starting from the first issues, the department of folk instruments of the institute, as a rule, was replenished with the most talented, active and well-trained students of the faculty. In 1953, the first graduates of the faculty were S.M. Kolobkov, A.A. Surkov, M.F. Rozhkov, A.Ya. Alexandrov.
