Nico Carstens is 90! concert posterA concert to mark the 90th birthday of the South African accordionist and composer Nico Carstens take place on Wednesday July 13th, 5pm, at the arts festival Vrystaat Kunstefees, Bloemfontain. Artists performing include the popular accordionist Stanislav Angelov.

Born on February 10th 1926 in CapeTown of Dutch parents, Carstens got his first accordion at the age of 13 and won an adult music competition six months later. He composed his first piece of music at the age of 17 and has written approximately 1200 songs, the most famous is ‘Zambesi’, written in the 1950s and recorded by Eddie Calvert, Acker Bilk, Bert Kaempfert, James Last, The Shadows, Floyd Cramer, Johnny Dankworth, and more.

As an accordionist, Carstens formed his first band in 1950. He has recorded over 90 albums, which have sold over 2 million copies in South Africa. He has performed all over South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and also in France.
