Iain MacPhail & Friends ‘Reflecting on Rankine’ CD, Scotland – UK

‘Reflecting on Rankine’ is a new CD by accordionist Iain MacPhail with accompaniment, in tribute to the still much admired Scottish country dance band accordionist/ composer Andrew Rankine. Many of Rankine’s best known compositions are included such as ‘The Weaver and his Wife’, ‘Donald Iain Rankine’, ‘The Cornerhouse Jig’, and ‘The Glenifer Polka’, plus arranged sets regularly featured by his band.

Andrew Rankine (1930-85) formed his first band in the village of Menstrie, Clackmannanshire in 1949. He became one of the most famous Scottish Country Dance band leaders, acclaimed by dancers, enthusiasts and fellow musicians. He was renowned not only for his skill as an accordionist but also for his ability as arranger and composer.

He was at the forefront in the development of a new approach to Country Dance music, which gathered momentum in the early 1950s. He introduced new harmonies and added an extra dimension by making greater use of the second accordion. Many of his compositions are played today by accordionists.

Iain MacPhail is a one of Scotland’s leading present day band leaders, and a composer in his own right.
