Volando con la musica - Sylvia Pagni

This is a record that clearly demonstrates the many and varied musical facets of Sylvia Pagni. In the diverse programme, she appears not only as accordionist, pianist and even vocalist, but also as an arranger and composer (6 of the 12 titles are hers).

The programme begins with three well-known tunes, all played on midi accordion:
“Danza delle ore” from “Gioconda” by A.Ponchielli, the overture from ”Poeta e contadino” by F. von Suppe and the symphony form “Norma” by V.Bellini; these traditional tunes are always amongst the programme of many accordionists (whether solo or in orchestral formations).

There then follows a couple of numbers in a jazz style by Pagni herself. “La giostra”, a captivating swing waltz and “Ritmo inganno” a well constructed piece, initially fast, then given a rhythmic cadence and accelerating once more to the coda in crescendo.

The in the middle of the CD, three tracks dedicated to Chopin, studies 3 and 12 from op.10 and n.14 from op.25, performed on the piano and arranged “electronically” in a personal style; the second of the three pieces has a modern rhythmic interpretation whilst the third is in a jazz style with an accordion solo in the middle.

The final part of the disc has four tunes all by Pagni. “Luciano Rispoli” ( her homage to the host of the Italian TV programme “Tappeto volante” where she had collaborated) is a Dixieland number; in the final three numbers Pagni appears also as a singer, revealing a pleasing natural voice.

“Tu con Lei” and “Le tue parole” recall the classic American songs of Gershwin, Porter etc., whilst the final song is in a more modern vein both in melody and arrangement.

In conclusion, this is a CD that can satisfy those of varied tastes and which has as its most convincing numbers those of the interpreter herself; and thus Pagni reveals that she is indeed a musician in every sense.
