AAA poster
PlayersJoin us live to help celebrate the 85th anniversary of the American Accordionists' Association! The AAA festival will be held at the Marriott Philadelphia West in Conshohocken, PA, July 12-16, 2023. Visit https://www.marriott.com/events/start.mi?id=1678315148565&key=GRP to book your hotel room today!

We are sure we speak for all when we say accordionists cannot wait to get back together - in person! - to celebrate our beloved instrument. And speaking of accordions, make sure you bring yours along to play in the 2023 Festival Orchestra led by world-renowned conductor, Joan Cochran Sommers!

Grayson Masefield (New Zealand) will join us for performances and workshops. Very personable and well-spoken, Grayson has won and been laureate at over a dozen international accordion competitions around the world in classical, entertainment, and digital categories. He is currently the instrumental music teacher for accordion at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Another special guest will be accordion legend Joey Miskulin (USA). Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2018 for his extraordinary accomplishments with the piano accordion, and a recent recipient of the AAA's Lifetime Achievement Award, Joey continues to delight listeners with his "flying fingers" and ability to engage audiences.

Looking for even more entertainment? Look no further than Mario Tacca, past AAA champion and AAA Artist in Residence, who will perform as a soloist at Friday night's gala concert, and with famed vocalist Mary Mancini at our Thursday night dinner.

Several accordion orchestras are already slated to perform, including the Accordion Pops Orchestra conducted by Al Terzo, the Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra conducted by Joanna Darrow, and the Busso Festival Orchestra conducted by Frank Busso Jr.

Conducting this year's Youth Orchestra will be Joanna Darrow, who has dedicated her entire life to performing, teaching, and promoting the accordion. She has performed several times with the Philadelphia Orchestra and performed all over Europe for over 30 years with her accordion teacher/husband, the late Stanley Darrow.

The United States Air Force Strolling Strings, with AAA President Frank Busso Jr. on accordion, will perform at our Saturday night banquet. Also at the banquet, we will present our coveted Lifetime Achievement Award to longtime AAA Board member Frank Busso Sr. Frank has been an educator, performer, conductor, and all-around ambassador of the accordion for decades.

After two years of virtual competition, we are excited to return to live competitions for students of all ages and abilities! Solos, duets, ensembles, and bands. Download the full list of categories, competition rules, and entry forms at: 2023AAARules.pdf

Vienna Accordion Club Favoriten Celebrates 50th Anniversary with a World Accordion Day Concert - Austria

Vienna Accordion Club Favoriten
Vienna Accordion Club logoThe Vienna Accordion Club Favoriten (WAF), conducted by Christian Höller, will celebrate their 50th anniversary with a concert on World Accordion Day (WAD).

The concert will take place at the Kulturgarage VHS in Vienna, Austria on May 6th and feature the performance of Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" arranged by Thomas Bauer.

The club was founded by Prof. Walter Maurer and May 6th was his birthday. He would have reached the age of 92 this year.

Harley Jones, CIA Public Relations anecdote: "Prof. Walter Maurer, was Secretary General of the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) from 1975 to 2006. At a CIA Summer Congress, I had suggested having a World Accordion Day. The Congress liked the idea and then discussion took place about when? Prof. Walter quickly proposed 6th May, the date in 1829, that Cyrill Demian filed a patent in Vienna for the accordion. Congress approved. With a big smile, I note that Walter forgot to tell Congress that it was also his birthday!"

National Accordion Association’s 2023 Convention is Now History – USA

NAA header
Sharon SeatonVideo: National Accordion Association (NAA) 2023 in Richardson, Texas, USA - Jim Rommel.

Sharon Seaton reports: Conventioneers enjoyed the return of the National Accordion Association NAA’s annual convention in 2022 and 2023 after the compulsory shutdown by the pandemic. It was good to see friends again, and folks were ready to learn, to play, and party a little bit.

After a busy day of Fun Band rehearsals and workshops, a baked potato/chili bar was served, followed by the Thursday evening concert, featuring conventioneers themselves.

Friday’s activities included more workshops and rehearsals, and then the highlight of the day: an evening with the Brave Combo and Alex Meixner performing “high energy music.” The music was sizzling, and the dancers filled the floor all evening. We heard so many excited comments and demands that we bring this group back next year.

Saturday’s activities included an impressive luncheon concert by the Youth Band, conducted by Dick Albreski of Edmond, Oklahoma. Ten young accordionists performed as an ensemble and alternated as soloists.

The day’s activities culminated with a banquet featuring live dinner music. What instrument? Accordion, of course! And then the grand finale concert! Headliner performers who also presented workshops during the three-day convention starred in the show: Gordon Kohl, Dee Langley, Lori Brooke, Eddie Monteiro, and Jim Rommel. It was a wonderful concert, whetting the appetites of those in the audience for next year’s musical experience!

What Are You Doing For May 6th World Accordion Day? - International

World Accordion Day header
World Accordion Day logoWhat are you doing for World Accordion Day (WAD) to promote the accordion in your country? World Accordion Day (WAD) is on May 6th, which is the day the accordion was patented in 1829.

WAD was started in 2009 by the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) and has been very successful, generating a lot of positive publicity for the accordion. A key part of this event is the WAD website.

Every association, group, orchestra, performer and teacher, is asked to actively support WAD by encouraging national and local accordion activities to happen in their country on this day or the weekend either side of WAD if that should be more convenient.

Everyone can register their WAD activity on the WAD website and send a report of their event after, for that website.

No event is too big or too small. ALL accordion events celebrating WAD are welcome. This is a CIA promotion for the accordion in which every accordion enthusiast can participate and help bring our accordion world together as well as strongly promote the accordion.
