International Summer Festival

The 6th International Summer Festival and Seminar was held in Palanga (Lithuania) from August 7th to 16th organized by Prof. Ricardas Sviackevicius and Eduardas Gabnys, Lithuanian Accordion Assotiation, Lithuanian Music Academy and Lithuanian Musicians society. Tutors included professors of Lithuanian Music Academy : Prof. Eduardas Gabnys, Doc. Zita Abromaviciute, Prof. Ricardas Sviackevicius, Genadijus Savkovas, Gintautas Smolskas as well as guest professors: Radjap Shaikhoutdinov (Ufa, Russia), Bogdan Dowlasz (Lodz, Poland).

Master classes were open for all listeners to attend.

Other performers included students from the Lithuanian Music Academy, students from the Vilnius, Kaunas, Siauliai and Panevezys Conservatories, and a teachers orchestra with soloist Zita Martinaviciute (soprano). All musicians were welcome to take part in concerts of the Republic United Accordion Teachers Orchestra which took place daily during the festival. A final gala concert was held on August, 15th.

"Sound Ways" - the XII International Festival of New music

The XII International "Sound Ways" Festival and Seminar of new music will be held in St.Petersburg from November 19th to 26th. The event will include workshops, composer’s portraits of L.Berio, K.H.Stahmer, A.Radvilovitch, S.Slonimski, M.Eggert, Arvo Paert as well as several world premieres which are to be performed by soloists and ensembles from Germany, USA, St.Petersburg, Poland, Croatia. Accordionist Sergej Tchirkov will give two Russian premieres: composition for accordion and tape by Klaus Stahmer (Germany) , new work for accordion "Drang" by John Palmer (Great Britain). Sergej will also take part in the first performance of "Simfonia Sacrae" for accordion, violin, choir written by Alexander Radvilovitch (St.Petersburg).

Other concerts will include recitals of Moritz Eggert (piano), Polish musicians Stanislaw Skoczynski (percussion), Kazimierz Dawidek (oboe) as well as concerts dedicated to the music of contemporary Ukrainian composers.

This is the second time the accordion will be featured at the "Sound Ways" festival. Last year Feria IV by F.Donatoni was performed by the same accordionist. Tutors of the seminar will include K.H.Stahmer, Sergej Slonimski, A.Radvilovitch and other composers For further information e-mail:

10th Festival of Accordion Artists

The 10th International Festival of Accordion Artists has been organized by the Music School and Jeunesses musicales of Kragujevac and was held in Kragujevac (Serbia) from July 4th to 14th. The invitation of winners of recent important international competitions, to take part in the event, has already become well established; among this year pariticipants were D.Emorine (France), K.Ischenko, S.Voitenko and A.Gainullin (Russia), D.Vasiljevic and V.Blagojevic (Yugoslavia).

An International Summer School for accordion was also held during the festival and more then 30 students from France, United Kingdom, Bosnia and Yugoslavia benefited from the expertise of tutors Viachaslav Semjonov (Russia), Boris Lenko (Slovakia), Radomir Tomic, Vojan Vasovic (Yugoslavia).

Thanks to materials given by Mr.Tomic, we have prepared a special report about the Festival in Kragujevac (including short interviews with participants) which is to be published soon.

Panaccordion 2000 - composer competition

The 1st international competition of composition for accordion "PanAccordion 2000" has been organized by the National Culture and Heritage Days in Oulu and the Finnish Accordion Institute and has been held in Finland. The purpose of the competition is to create new chamber music literature for accordion. On August, 12th Kimmo Matila (director of the Finnish Accordion Institute) announced the results of the competition, according to the decision of Jury. The president of the Jury was prof. Mikko Heinio. Other members were composer Harri Wessman and accordionist Timmo Kinunen. Over 15 compositions were received from 15 countries.

Results:

First equal:

  • Composer: Mario Marcelo Mary (Argentina/France), Work: "Las intuiciones de Galileo" (for accordion and guitar)
  • Composer: Marcin Bortnowski (Poland), Work: "Music in Lent" (accordion and string quartet)

Second equVladimir Zubitskyal:

  • Composer: Vladimir Zubitsky (Ukraine/Italy), Work: "Fatum" Sonata (three accordions)
  • Composer: Daping Qin (China/Finland), Work: "Acoprano" (accordion and soprano singer)

Third equal:

  • Composer: Edward Boguslawski (Poland), Work: Impromptu III (accordion and string quartet)
  • Composer: Asko Hyvдrinen, Work: Ehiknosdeux (accordion and string quartet)

Honor awards:

  • Composer: John Gould (England), Work: "Flying" (accordion & vibr) Ivano Battiston
  • Composer: Mari Amor (Estonia), Work: "Charleston" (accordion, clarinet, tuba, piatto & woodblock)
  • Composer: Ivano Battiston (Italy), Works: "Paganiniana" (2 accordions) and "Two Mandalas" (4 accordions)

Seminar of Accordion

Switzerland

The international seminar of accordion will take place from September, 22nd to 24th in Ssisach, Switzerland. Prof. Alexander Dmitriev (St.Petersburg) has been invited to take part in the event both as a tutor and as a perfomer. Alexander is also going to present a lecture on contemporary music in St.Petersburg and Russia.

R.Sviackevicius won Stefano Bizzarri Prize

Lithuanian accordionist Raimondas Sviackevicius was awarded the first prize at the International competition for accordionists "9th International Stefano Bizzarri Prize" which was held recently in Teramo, Italy. A lot of competitiors from Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Russia, Serbia and USA participated in the event.

Besides the first prize, the jury, which included Gervasio Marcosignori (President), Filippo Maria Caramazza (composer and flutist), Bruno Bizzarri (pianist) and Roberto Fossemo, awarded to Raimondas the Exclusive Golden Lyra Award (highest prize of the competition), which was presented by the Minister of Teramo Province to the best competitor (chosen from the piano and button accordion sections).
