XXIV International Moscow Festival “Bayan and Bayanists”

With participation of the federal agency of culture, Russian Gnesin Academy of Music and the Friedrich Lips Fund the traditional XXIV International Festival “Bayan and bayanists” took place in the concert hall of the Russian Gnesin Academy of Music in Moscow from December 12 to 16, 2012.

Unter Patronanz des russischen Kulturministeriums, der russischen Gnesin-Musikakademie sowie des Friedrich Lips-Fonds fand in der Zeit vom 12.-16. Dezember 2012 bereits zum 24. Mal das traditionelle Internationale Festival "Bajan und Bajanisten" im Konzertsaal der russischen Gnessin-Musikakademie in Moskau statt.

The opening concert was started by Valentina Bobiysheva with her accordion Orchestra “Vivat, accordion!” performing works by E. Podgaits, A. Repnikov, A. Timoshenko and G. Gershwin. Semen Shmelkov excelled with the final from Repnikov's “Concerto POEMA”, Lev Lavrov with a fantasy for bayan by Timoshenko and Stanislav Serebyannikov with Gershwin's “Rhapsody in blue”.

Das Eröffnungskonzert wurde von Valentina Bobischewa mit ihrem Akkordeonorchester „Vivat, Akkordeon!“ eingeleitet, die Werke von E. Podgaits,        A. Repnikow, A. Timoschenko und G. Gershwin zur Aufführung brachte. Semen Schmelkow brillierte dabei mit dem Finale aus Repnikow’s „Konzert-Poema“, Lew Lawrow mit einer Fantasie für Bajan von Timoschenko und Stanislaw Serebjannikow mit Gershwin’s „Rhapsody in blue“.

Again Russian soloists were very successful at international competitions, where they could achieve numerous awards this year. The following laureates took place in the second part of the concert: K. Tarabrina (1st prize-winner of the Roland V competition in Rome), R. Mudrizky (Castelfidardo), Samgar (Tianjin), D. Kiselev (Coupe Mondiale, category "Masters"), A. Kolomitsev (Castelfidardo, category "D" and Trophée Mondiale, "National Trophy", I. Puriz (CMA senior category), and the duo of O. Ivashina and E. Listunov (Castelfidardo).

Russische Solisten waren im heurigen Jahr wieder sehr erfolgreich bei internationalen Wettbewerben, wo sie sich zahlreiche Preise erspielen konnten. Im 2. Teil des Konzerts brillierten folgende Laureaten: K. Tarabrina (1. Preisträgerin des Roland V-Wettbewerbs in Rom), R. Mudrizkij (Castelfidardo), Samgar (Tianjin), D. Kiselew (Coupe Mondiale, Kategorie „Masters“), A. Kolomitsew (Castelfidardo, Kategorie „D“ und Trophée Mondiale, „National Trophy“, I. Puriz (CMA-Senior-Kategorie) sowie das Duo O. Ivaschina und E. Listunow (Castelfidardo).

Performances of music ensembles are very popular in Russia. In Castelfidardo, the "Sachar band" ("sugar band" in Russian language) from Belgorod has won the category "World music and jazz" and constantly takes part in festivals in Moscow, Voronezh and other Russian cities. During the bayan festival, they enchanted the audience with original works and own arrangements.

Es gehört zu den großen Traditionen Russlands, dass in Ensembles  verschiedenster Besetzungen musiziert wird. Die „Sachar-Band“ („Zucker-Band“ im Russischen) aus Belgorod hat in Castelfidardo die Kategorie „World music and jazz“ gewonnen und nimmt ständig an Festivals in Moskau, Woronesch und anderen russischen Städten teil. Beim Bajanfestival verzauberten sie das Publikum mit Originalwerken und eigenen Arrangements.

After having won the ensemble category at the Coupe Mondiale in Spoleto this year, “Esse Quintet” (originally founded in 2007) from St. Petersburg showed a fulminant performance.

Danach spielte das 2007 gegründete „Esse-Quintett“ aus St. Petersburg, das heuer neben anderen Erfolgen auch die Ensemble-Kategorie bei der Coupe Mondiale in Spoleto gewinnen konnte.

Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the festival was the concert dedicated to Vladislav Zolatariev in the occasion of his 70th birthday. With very moving words, Friedrich Lips praised the contribution of the composer to the entire evolution of the bayan repertoire. The works of Zolatariev certainly represent a quantum leap and were at the origin of many developments after.

The soloists Samgar (Partita), S. Shmelkov (Rondo Capriccioso) and I. Puriz (Sonata N° 3) impressed very much in the first part of the following concert.

After the break, V. Volkov performed the rarely played “24 Meditations” for bayan, which made enormous demands on the artist and the audience. Many people in the audience believed as they listened, that Zolatariev had felt his tragic life in this work, in advance.

Zweifellos einer der Höhepunkte des gesamten Festivals war das Wladislaw Solotarjow aus Anlass seines 70. Geburtstags gewidmete Konzert. In sehr bewegenden Worte würdigte Friedrich Lips die Verdienste des Komponisten im Rahmen der gesamten Entwicklung der Bajanliteratur. Das Werk Solotarjows stellt sicher einen Quantensprung dar und war Voraussetzung für vieles weitere.

Die Solisten Samgar (Partita), S. Schmelkow (Rondo Capriccioso) und I. Puriz (Sonate Nr 3) beeindruckten im 1. Teil des folgenden Konzerts.

Nach der Pause brachte V. Wolkow die selten gespielten „24 Meditationen“ für Bajan zu Gehör, die enorme Anforderungen an den Künstler sowie auch an das Publikum stellten. Viele im Publikum vertraten die Ansicht, Solotarjow hätte in diesem Werk sein ganzes tragisches Leben vorweg genommen.

Traditionally, a concert of the festival is dedicated to the bayanists of a certain region of Russia. This time accordionists/bayanists from the city of Ufa (Bashkortostan) were selected to show their excellent musicianship and excellent technical abilities in the context of solo and ensemble performances. Then the harmonica from the city of Saratov, Russia and the Caucasus, as well as the bandoneon, was shown in a very stunning way, so that the audience demanded several encores.

Traditionellerweise ist ein Konzert des Festivals den Bajanisten einer bestimmten Region Russlands gewidmet ist. Dieses Mal waren Akkordeonisten/Bajanisten aus der Stadt Ufa (Republik Baschkortostan) ausgewählt, um ihre ausgezeichnete Musikalität und hervorragende Technik im Rahmen von Solo- und Ensembledarbietungen zu zeigen. Danach standen die Harmonika aus Russland, dem Kaukasus und der Stadt Saratow sowie das Bandoneon im Mittelpunkt von mitreissenden Darbietungen, sodass das Publikum mehrere Zugaben einforderte.

The Moscow “Russian timber”-Quintet, as well as the Italian jazz accordionist Renzo Ruggieri, together with his excellent pianist Paolo di Sabatino, shared the closing gala. Under the direction of W. Kusminsky (bayan-french horn) the ensemble P.Saizev (bayan-oboe), V. Stoma (bayan-clarinet), M. Dmitrokopulo (bayan-tuba) and A. Kotshurov (free bass bayan) celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. After their first performance in the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in 1982, they traveled the world and played some 3,000 concerts. Highlights of their concert life included appearances at meetings between the Presidents of Russia and the United States, as well as at the political summit Russia-Europe, among others.

Die Abschlussgala teilten sich dieses Mal das  Moskauer “Russkij Timber”-Quintett sowie der italienische Jazz-Akkordeonist Renzo Ruggieri mit seinem ausgezeichneten Pianisten Paolo di Sabatino. Das Ensemble unter der Leitung von W. Kusminskij (Bajan-Waldhorn) feierte heuer sein 30jähriges Bestehen. Nach dem 1. Auftritt im Tschaikowskij-Konzertsaal im Jahre 1982 hat er zusammen mit P.Saizew (Bajan-Oboe), W. Stoma (Bajan-Klarinette), M. Dmitrokopulo (Bajan-Tuba) sowie A. Kotschurow (Melodiebass-Bajan) die Welt bereist und dabei etwa 3000 Konzerte gespielt. Zu den highlights ihres Konzertlebens zählten u.a. Auftritte bei Treffen zwischen den Präsidenten Russlands und den USA sowie beim Politgipfel Russland-Europa.

Renzo Ruggieri has developed his own innovative accordion method built on jazz in Italy and already charmed his audience with different projects: Renzo Ruggieri Orchestra (appearance at the San Remo Festival), Jazz Quartet, duo with guitar or actually with piano. Paolo di Sabatino is his congenial partner, with whom he presented a program of famous Italian melodies in jazz form. Of course, his hits including "carnevale" were not missing.

Renzo Ruggieri entwickelte in Italien seine eigene auf Jazz aufgebaute innovative Akkordeonmethode und trat bereits mit verschiedensten Projekten vor sein Publikum: Renzo Ruggieri-Orchester (Auftritt beim San Remo-Festival), Jazz-Quartett, Duos mit Gitarre oder eben jetzt mit Klavier. In Paolo di Sabatino hat er einen kongenialen Partner gefunden, mit dem er ein Programm bekannter italienischer Melodien in Jazzform präsentierte. Natürlich durften seine Hits wie u.a. “Carnevale” nicht fehlen.

According to the tradition (since 1993), the “SILVER DISCs” were conferred to Valentina Bobysheva, Natalya Umnova, Valery Petrov, Vladimir Novozhilov, Gennady Nizovsky, the ensemble "Russian timber", Herbert Scheibenreif and Renzo Ruggieri for their outstanding contribution to the bayan art. Exhibitions and presentations of musical instruments of chief world producers took place in the foyer of the concert hall Russian Gnessin Academy of Music throughout the festival.

Entsprechend der Tradition (seit 1993) wurde an Valentina Bobischewa, Natalja Umnova, Valery Petrow, Vladimir Nowoschilow, Gennady Nizowsky, das Ensemble „Russkij Timber“, Herbert Scheibenreif und Renzo Ruggieri die „SILVER DISK“ für besondere Verdienste um die Bajankunst vergeben. Während des Festivals fanden im Foyer des Konzertsaals der russischen Gnessin Musikakdemie Ausstellungen von Noten und Tonträgern sowie Vorführungen von Musikinstrumenten statt.

During the festival, an all-Russian conference entitled "Bayan, accordion and harmonica in the music culture of Russia in the beginning of the 21st century: tendencies and perspectives” was held in Tula (of course a visit to the local instrument factory was not missing!).

The inter-regional association of bayanists and accordionists held its general assembly in the Little Hall of the Gnesin Academy were participants focussed on the future organization of the Russian participation at international competitions. Finally, also the upcoming CMA competition in Samara from September, 24 - 29 2013 was discussed. A lecture by Prof. Valery Sharibov discussed the current situation and the future of the Caucasian harmonica.

Im Rahmen des Festivals wurde in Tula (natürlich durfte ein Besuch in der dortigen Instrumentenfabrik nicht fehlen!) eine allrussische Konferenz mit dem Titel “Bajan, Akkordeon und Harmonika in der Musikkultur Russlands zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts: Tendenzen und Perspektiven” abgehalten.

Bei der Generalversammlung des interregionalen Verbandes derBajanisten und Akkordeonisten im Kleinen Saal der Gnesin-Akademie standen Fragen der künftigen Organisation der russischen Teilnahme bei internationalen Wettbewerben im Mittelpunkt. Schließlich wurde auch der kommende CMA-Wettbewerb in Samara vom 24.-29. September 2013 diskutiert. Bei einem Vortrag von Prof. Valery Scharibow wurde die aktuelle Situation sowie die Zukunft der kaukasischen Harmonika erörtert.
