HOHNER draws a great crowd to the festival weekend.

The whole world comes to the home of the harmonica and the accordion.

In Trossingen, Germany, 28th October to 1st November 2009, some 2,000 visitors and 700 participants from 30 nations came to Trossingen, where the Federation Internationale de l'Harmonica (FIH) and the musical instrument maker HOHNER were hosting the 6th World Harmonica Festival.

This year marked the sixth time for this diverse festival, and everybody attending had lots of enthusiasm for an instrument, the harmonica, that is often very small. In fact, several performers utilized the Little Lady harmonica during the festival, which is less than two inches long.

The opening ceremony of the festival on Wednesday heard the sound of HOHNER accordions Orchestra Hohnerklang and harmonicas, led by Hans-Günther Kölz. After this successful start the stars of the harmonica scene were enjoyed by the audiences, in a festival of many different musical highlights. For the first time this year, the accordion was a very integral part of the festival.

There were many highlights during the course of the four day festival, especially the three Gala evening concerts.

During the day 19 workshops were presented, which offered amateur players and fans the chance to learn 'up close and personal' from the professionals about artistic and technical topics.

Harmonica players of all ages - from beginners to professionals - showing off their considerable skills. Beginners as well as professionals competed with each other for the title of World Champion, and the international panels of judges elected the "Olympia Winner" in each of 14 categories. Those wishing to try again will have to wait four years, when the next World Harmonica Festival occurs.

In addition to the festival competitions, workshops and concerts, attendees could tour the Hohner factory, visit a special exhibition of the Deutsche Harmonica Museum, and attend Late Night Sessions every night, with chances to see some amazing undiscovered talents, and meet stars like Howard Levy and Jerry Portnoy.

Around the festival was always the company HOHNER as the local contact. The HOHNER Service team made minor repairs of instruments on the spot, while the company opened its doors to visitors and provided factory tours to all, with a glimpse behind the scenes of how harmonica's are manufactured.

Each of the 30 nations represented at the festival contributed their share to the particular international and cosmopolitan atmosphere of this exciting Festival and competition.

Among the highlights were the gala concerts, which were held daily featuring world-famous stars of the harmonica scene.

Whether Olivier Ker Ourio from France, the King's Harmonica Quintet of Hong Kong, Jerry Portnoy and Howard Levy from the U.S., Willi Burger from Italy or the trio Nebl from Germany - there was something for everyone's musical tastes including a lot of spontaneous "play togethers" .

"The absolute highlight of the festival was the Concerto for the Diatonic Harmonica and Orchestra written by Howard Levy (picture right), which he performed with the Hohner Accordion Orchestra…" says Klaus Stetter, Managing director of HOHNER Musikinstrumente GmbH & Co.KG.

For the first time, this piece was performed with an accordion orchestra and confirmed what experts have long known - that the harmonica and accordion to create a harmonious team.

"For example the Spanish group Reyes del KO met the Dutch musician Dwayne Verheyden with his accordion. Without hesitating they invited him to come to the stage and to play a boogie, jamming together." continues Stetter.

The enthusiasm of the performers came back to the common denominator of spontaneous music-making and enjoyment.

An exceptional sound experience on Saturday was Nebl Andreas with the Trio Nebl followed by the Hong Kong Harmonica Orchestra at the Martin Luther Church.

The festival finished on Sunday with the DHV Honorary President Ernst Pfister thanking the festival participants for their participation and commitment. He also emphasized the importance of music education for young children.

The Festival ended with a Chill Out Concert, organized by the band Opportunity together with Steve Baker. "It was a lot of fun seeing so many different people from different countries united by their love and passion for music," resumed Klaus Stetter.

Any regrets at the end of the festival quickly faded, with the anticipation for the next festival in four years.

HOHNER zieht zufrieden Bilanz nach dem Festival-Wochenende
Die ganze Welt zu Gast in der Heimat der Mundharmonika und des Akkordeons

Trossingen, 02. November 2009 2000 Besucher und 700 Teilnehmer machten sich am vergangenen Wochenende auf den Weg nach Trossingen, wo die Fédération Internationale de l’Harmonica (FIH) und der Musikinstrumentenbauer HOHNER das sechste World Harmonica Festival ausrichteten.

Die feierliche Eröffnung des Festivals am Mittwoch gestaltete das Orchester Hohnerklang unter der Leitung von Hans-Günther Kölz. Nach diesem gelungenen Auftakt gaben sich die Stars der Mundharmonikaszene die Klinke in die Hand und die Besucher des Festivals erlebten an jedem Veranstaltungstag verschiedene musikalische Highlights. Erstmals war in diesem Jahr auch das Akkordeon fester Bestandteil der Konzerte.

Schon lange vor Festivalbeginn waren die Workshops voll belegt, weil sich die Hobbymusiker die Chance nicht entgehen lassen wollten, von den Profis wertvolle Tipps zu erhalten. In den verschiedenen Wettbewerben stellten außerdem Mundharmonikaspieler aller Altersgruppen – vom Anfänger bis zum Profi - ihr Können unter Beweis. Rings um das Festivalgeschehen war HOHNER als Ansprechpartner vor Ort.

So führte das HOHNER-Service-Team kleine Reparaturen am Instrument direkt vor Ort aus, während das Unternehmen seine Pforten für die Besucher öffnete und im Rahmen von Werksführungen allen Interessierten einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der Mundharmonikafertigung bot. Jede der 30 beim Festival vertretenen Nationen trug ihren Teil zu der besonderen internationalen und weltoffenen Atmosphäre bei.

Zu den Höhepunkten zählten die täglich stattfindenden Galakonzerte mit weltweit bekannten Stars der Mundharmonikaszene.
Ob Olivier Ker Ourio aus Frankreich, das King’s Harmonica Quintett aus Hongkong, Jerry Portnoy und Howard Levy aus den USA, Willi Burger aus Italien oder das Trio Nebl aus Deutschland – für jeden Musikgeschmack war etwas dabei und auch die Begeisterung der auftretenden Künstler führte immer wieder zum spontanen gemeinsamen Musizieren.

So haben die Spanier Reyes del KO am Freitag das Publikum begeistert, als sie den Holländer Dwayne Verheyden mit seinem Akkordeon überraschend auf die Bühne holten und gemeinsam mit ihm Boogie jammten.

Für ein außergewöhnliches Klangerlebnis sorgte am Samstag Andreas Nebl mit dem gleichnamigen Trio Nebl und im Anschluss daran das Hongkong Harmonica Orchester in der Martin-Luther-Kirche. Der Höhepunkt des Festivals war zweifellos das von Howard Levy komponierte Concerto für diatonische Harp und großes Orchester.

Erstmalig wurde dieses Stück mit dem HOHNER Akkordeon-Orchester 1927 Trossingen e.V. aufgeführt und bestätigte was Kenner schon lange wissen – dass Mundharmonika und Akkordeon ein harmonisches Team bilden. Bis spät in die Nacht erfüllten Mundharmonika- und Akkordeonklänge an den Festivaltagen die Luft – denn die Late Night Sessions gaben allen Hobbymusikern die Chance, zusammen mit den Profis ihre Musikleidenschaft auszuleben.

Mit den Siegerehrungen neigte sich das Festival am Sonntag dem Ende zu und DHV-Ehrenpräsident Ernst Pfister dankte den Festivalteilnehmern für ihre Beteiligung und ihren Einsatz. Er betonte außerdem, wie wichtig die Verankerung der musikalischen Ausbildung in der Erziehung von Kindern ist. Mit einem lachenden und einem weinenden Auge ließen daraufhin die Teilnehmer und Besucher das Festival in dem Chill-Out-Konzert, das von der Band Opportunity zusammen mit Steve Baker gestaltet wurde, ausklingen – doch das Bedauern über das Ende des Festivals verflog schnell angesichts der Vorfreude auf das nächste Treffen in vier Jahren.
