  The 42nd PIF International "Città di Castelfidardo" will take place from 10th to 17th September 2017. The competitions again have categories for accordion soloists and groups and many festival performances and concerts. 2016 PIF Artistic Director is Christian Riganelli. The City Council Administration of Castelfidardo (Italy) led by Mayor Roberto Ascani (picture right) announces prize money of 20,500 Euro. Entrants can participate with any kind of accordion, of any brand, entering a maximum of two (2) categories (one for soloists and one for groups).  En tercer lugar, estudiamos el sonido del acordeón en su estado estacionario. (ENTER). Finalmente, analizamos los dos tipos principales de pitch bending (el producido con el dedo más el fuelle o el producido solo con el dedo).El estudio acústico de la lengüeta libre del acordeón aporta conocimiento de interés tanto para investigadores en Acústica como para intérpretes y constructores de esta familia instrumental. En primer lugar, analizamos el efecto que la colocación de una carga en el extremo libre de las lengüetas produce en la frecuencia fundamental y timbre de las mismas. En segundo lugar, estudiando la evolución de los armónicos y de ciertos parámetros psicoacústicos, caracterizamos los dos tipos básicos de ataque musical (de fuelle y de dedo). En tercer lugar, estudiamos el sonido del acordeón en su estado estacionario.  Video: The LAO performs the 3rd (final) movement of 'Flight'. The video was created by Raphael Neal, an actor and writer from France, known for Marie Antoinette (2006), Trouble Every Day (2001) and Fever (2014).The London Accordion Orchestra’s most recent concert at the Union Chapel was timed to coincide with the launch of their CD (cover left), recorded at Abbey Road last summer. During this concert they filmed a music video to help promote the CD. The Union Chapel concert in London was part of the Daylight Music series, which brings together an eclectic mix of performers for the audience to experience new music. The London Accordion Orchestra managed to fit 40 accordionist and 3 percussionists on to a tiny stage, making full use of the pulpit space too! The concert was well received, especially the world premiere of 'Peace', written by Ian Watson - musical director. The music was inspired by a trip to Normandy, and recollects the Normandy landings of World War Two, with a soaring refrain that temporarily denies the listener the grand ending they are expecting. The concert meant we were able to introduce the accordion orchestra sound to a wider audience, exactly what the Daylight Music series aims to do. The CD is available for download from http://www.londonao.co.uk/ as well as T-Shirts and scores of some of the pieces. Do take a look – the proceeds all go back into the orchestra’s funds for future concerts and competitions. |

Schnittke. 18 April and 22 April - Performance with the Ensemble of Neapolitan Instruments 'Serenata'. 21 April - Duet with organ in The Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Virgin Mary in Moscow Arseniy Strokovskiy has formed a duo with saxophonist Ivan Dyma. Above is a demo track of the duo who are playing a lot of modern and jazz-avangarde music.  Vídeo: Grayson Masefield interpreta el estreno mundial de "The New Tomorrow" la última obra compuesta por la compositora macedonia Bete Ilin."The New Tomorrow" fue compuesta para que Grayson Masefield la estrenara como parte de su repertorio en el recital para su maestro solista de la Escuela de Música de Lausana, el tutor de acordeón Stéphane Chapuis. La composición recibió comentarios muy positivos del público y de sus colegas compositores. La obra es para acordeón solo acompañado por una orquesta de cuerda que no estaba disponible, por lo que Bete Ilin readaptó "The New Tomorrow" para ser interpretada por acordeón solo y un quinteto de cuerda. Bete Ilin escribió: "Esta obra muestra una parte de mi personalidad. Al componerla, quise mostrar al público un poco de positividad y optimismo, cosas que prevalecen en mi vida. La historia es la siguiente: mañana es un nuevo día que nos trae nuevos retos, nuevas situaciones y acontecimientos, algunos positivos y otros negativos. "El nuevo mañana" transmite al público el mensaje de que, pase lo que pase hoy y en el futuro, somos nosotros quienes decidimos cómo reaccionar". Bete Ilin ha ganado varios premios de composición, entre ellos el CIA Honored Friend of the Accordion Award en 2015 en Finlandia.  During his recent guest performance at an accordion festival in Siberia, Scottish accordionist Gary Blair was introduced to 15 year old Roman Semeryak, a blind Russian boy who is an aspiring accordion player in need of a better instrument. Gary then set up an appeal on social media to raise funds, and this received a rapid and heart-warming worldwide response that met and exceeded the funds required to buy a quality new Bugari 120 bass piano accordion. The presentation of the new accordion was made on March 25th to young Roman Semeryak at the National Bayan Competition concert in Novosibirsk, Siberia, featuring accordionist and composer Franck Angelis (France) and Roman Jbanov (France). According to Gary Blair, “He was the happiest boy in the world!” The following day he and several others attended a masterclass by Franck Angelis. Gary commented “The Russian people were amazed at the generosity of people from all parts of the world. They find it important to encourage the young talent in the accordion world and help strive for world peace through music." Roman Semeryak (along with his new accordion!) and several other young accordionists from Siberia will be travelling to France to compete in a couple of competitions and concerts ...thanks again to everyone that made this little boy’s dream come true!”. |

 Gerald Crossman was one of the most significant figures in the post-war UK accordion scene. He was a highly accomplished accordionist, pianist, organist, bandleader, composer, arranger, writer, and a Vice President of the National Accordion Organisation of the United Kingdom (NAO). When he died in 2015 he had no living relatives, and his unpublished accordion compositions and arrangements were sent to Rob Howard. His orchestral works were sent to the Light Music Society. | On Saturday April 1st, 7.30pm, the popular country music singer/accordionist Nathan Carter performs on concert at 3 Arena, Dublin. Also appearing as a special guest is the diatonic accordionist Sharon Shannon and her band. Liverpool-born Nathan Carter (born 1990) has achieved great success very quickly as a singer on the Irish clubs, concert and festivals circuit. He was brought up in a family with strong Irish roots. At age of four he began to learn to play the accordion, and he later became a chorister in the Liverpool Boys Choir, touring the world, including singing for the Pope in Rome. Annual trips to Ireland to compete in the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil resulted in medals for both solo singing and accordion. Nathan joined the Liverpool Ceili Band, playing accordion and piano, and also began playing solo singing gigs, beginning a show business career that continues to unfold. Sharon Shannon, from Galway, has achieved considerable international popularity with her Irish traditional music played in a style that incorporates influences from other traditions. Her latest CD ‘Sacred Earth’ was released on March 17th, St Patrick’s Day. |

 The first Festival International D’Accordeon takes place on Saturday April 1st and Sunday April 2nd, 7pm until 11pm both evenings, at the Salles Des Fetes, Deuil-La-Barre, a northern suburb of Paris, France. The festival presents many styles of accordion music, including classical, folk, musette, jazz, tango, polka, rock, and swing.  The all-female Irish traditional music band Cherish the Ladies, are on a western US tour with dates in Oregon, Washington, Oklahoma, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Kansas. Details are on the poster.The team for the tour is Joanie Madden, Mary Coogan, Mirella Murray, Kathleen Boyle, Nollaig Casey, Hannah Rarity, dancers Jason Oremus and Garrett Coleman, along with sound engineer John Murray. "It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn't enjoy what they do", says the Boston Globe speaking of Cherish the Ladies, the long-running, Grammy-nominated, Irish-American super group that formed in New York City in 1985 to celebrate the rise of extraordinary women in what had been a male-dominated Irish music scene. | Jazz accordionist Marcel Loeffler accompanied by the Domi Emorine Quartet perform in concert on Tuesday April 4th, 8.30pm, at the Sunset Sunside Jazz Club, 60 rue des Lombards, 75001 Paris. Marcel Loeffler, originally influenced by the likes of Gus Viseur and Art Van Damme, has a wide experience of performing various styles of jazz, from gypsy to modern jazz. Of the accordion in France he commented: “For a long time we have heard the accordion backing up French singers, from Brel to Renaud, and for many, it remained simply an instrument for dance or accompaniment. Today, I think that it has finally found its rightful place.” |

 Texas Folklife’s annual ‘Big Squeeze 2017’ accordion contest finals for up-and-coming Texas musicians and concert takes place on Saturday April 22nd, 1pm to 5pm, at The Bullock Texas State History Museum, Austin, Texas. The contest, for those aged 21 years of age or younger, involves players in all genres of the Lone Star State’s accordion-based music, including German, Czech, Polish polka, Creole, Cajun, and zydeco; and conjunto, norteño, and Tejano.The concert features the finalists and accordionists Rio Jordan (Conjunto), Ruben Paul Moreno (Zydeco), and The Gulf Coast Playboys (Cajun). The Big Squeeze is supported by Hohner Inc., the Texas Music Office, by grants from H-E-B, Texas Commission on the Arts, the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department, the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board, and the Houston Endowment.
