Ricardo Llanos Doctoral Thesis, Acoustics of the Accordion - Spainby Harley Jones |
Last year Ricardo Llanos obtained his PhD with research on acoustics of the accordion in the University of the Basque Country (Spain). The abstract of the Doctoral Thesis is: The acoustic study of the free reed of the accordion provides meaningful knowledge both for researchers in acoustics and for players and constructors of this instrumental family. First, we analyse the effect that placing a load on the free end of the reeds has on their fundamental frequency and timbre. Secondly, by means of the study of the evolution of harmonics and psychoacoustic parameters, we characterize the two basic types of musical attack (bellows attack and finger attack). Thirdly, we study the steady-state of the sound of the accordion. Finally, we analyse the two main kinds of pitch bending or continuous transition between two sounds (the one produced by the finger and the bellows and the one produced only by the finger).
